Poll
Question: Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin
Option 1: Frank Sinatra votes: 2
Option 2: Dean Martin votes: 6
Title: Franks and Deans
Post by: Ken B on December 22, 2014, 02:38:20 PM
It's that time of year.

No banana because, as any shopper knows, at this time of year you cannot dodge these two.  No Tony Bennett because I do not wish to be the occasion of sin. No Bing Crosby because he's irish.  No Luciano Pavarotti because only singers are eligible.

I expect this poll to be a one-sided slaughter, but I cast my vote for Dean Martin. Will there be two of us?  :(

Why is this in the classical part of the forum? I voted for 'banana' because I don't like Sinatra or Dean Martin.

I took Dino too, always liked him. Frank was a fine actor though...

Because that's where the Polling Station is. We'll all sleep OK tonight anyway. :)

The poll results so far are very surprising (Martin 5, Sinatra 0)...but I voted for Dino also. Why? Matt Helm ;D  And too, he was a Buckeye (from northeast Ohio, like me); a soldier (served in the Army during WWII in Akron, just a few miles from my hometown); and is just a more appealing personality than Sinatra.

Well, I'm a Frank Sinatra fan and feel that he is arguably the top male singer of the 20th century (Bing Crosby is up there in the higher echelons for me) - I have about a dozen Frank CDs and none of Dean Martin (although the guy could carry a tune - ;)) - now, for those interested in why Frank is invariably ranked at or near the top (plenty of lists to google), take a look at Will Friedwald's book below (title a little misleading - really about 20th century 'popular' singing).  But hey, just my two cents! Dave :)

Me too. Though as a person I guess Dean Martin was an infinitely nicer aquaintance.

Yep, my wife disliked Sinatra for many years, mainly because of his first divorce, reported relationship to gangsters, etc. - BUT, I kept playing his music and she finally came around and feels pretty much the same as I do about his voice and stature, although she loves Mel Torme just as much, and does not enjoy the Bingster, as I do. - Dave :)

You have mispelled. The greatest male singer of the century is spelt Dietrich Fischer-Crosby.

I believe I would also put Nat King Cole ahead of Frank.  Still enjoy the heck out of Frank, just that there are some I prefer over him.

OH Bill - a dangerous choice - ;)  I love Nat King Cole and have plenty of his CDs as a singer, although I must say that he was also a superb jazz pianist, so singing was kind of a second choice for him early on - his voice is wonderful, mellow, and enjoyable but the nuacnes that Sinatra  could put into the lyrics where each line he sung reflected a feeling meant has amazed me over the years of repeated listenings - just one example is the film 'Pal Joey' - I'm just not sure another singer could have pulled off singing those songs w/ such emotion and impact - BUT again my two cents - Dave :)

Sounds like we agree that we're lucky to have all their music, Dave.  And there seems to be a decent output by each. :)
