Not someone whom I knew, but I had met him a couple of times.
Philip Radcliffe had mentioned on more than one occasion that of all his pupils over the years, Gowers was the only one who could write fugues approaching the quality of Bach. His PhD was, unusually for the time, on the Rosicrucian period of Erik Satie's music. You may have heard his TV scores - the title music of BBC's The Spanish Civil War was especially memorable.
