Symphony 9: Furtwangler
Symphony 9: (with conclusion), Rattle
Symphony 8: Horenstein (Vox/Turnabout)
Symphony 3: Szell
Symphony 6: Klemperer (EMI)
I am probably voting the straight Karajan ticket, but I have a fondness for Schuricht in 3 and Jochum/Bavaria in 4.
Symphony #9: Haitink/Con'bouw (the second one, c. 1981)
Symphony #4: Jochum/BPO
Symphony #6: Klemperer/Philharmonia
Symphony #7: Klemperer/Philharmonia
Masses (counting as one): Jochum/BRSO
Chosen without wishing to repeat works; it was hard to keep Walter's 4 and 9 off the list.
7 (Dresden/Blomstedt)
6 (Philharmonia/Klemperer)
6 (Berlin/Barenboim)
8 - adagio (Munich/Celibidache)
3 (Bavarian Radio/Kubelik)

Nah, you're fine.
Symphony No. 0 "doesn't count" ;D.
P.S. It is amazing to think that he would do such a thing to a great piece (though I've only heard it once or twice, I was very impressed). He was so hard on himself.

What about No.9?
(in no particular order)
No. 8 (Boulez/Vienna)
No. 8 (Chailly/Concertgebouw)
No. 8 (Giulini/Vienna)
No. 8 (Haitink/Concertgebouw)
No. 8 (Karajan/Vienna)

5 is rather restrictive for 11 symphonies (and let's not forget the non-symphonic music.)
3: Schuricht/VPO
4: Klemperer/BRSO (live)
6: Celibidache/EMI
7: Rosbaud
9: Schuricht/VPO

Symphony No. 4 Honeck/Pittsburgh
I dl'd this a few weeks ago to try out b/c I've never liked the 4th. Still haven't listened to it, though.
Sym 5 - Dohnányi/Cleveland (might be one of the top 5 recordings of anything, actually)
Sym 8 - Jochum/Bamberg/St Florian
Sym 9 - Rattle/Berlin
E Minor Mass - Creed/SWR
Quintet - Leipzig/Rohde?
Norrington 6th but I don't want to just include symphonies
Five seems far too few. However...
4: Celibidache/MPO (Vienna, 1989)
5: Jochum/RCO (1986)
8: Celibidache/MPO (Tokyo, 1990)
8: Jochum/Bamberger SO (St. Florian and Tokyo, 1982)
9: Jochum/MPO
and using Sarge's math: ;)
9: Wand/BPO

You didn't give us enough choices, Jeffrey ;) But my favorite Ninths are Giulini/Vienna, Haitink/Concertgebouw (the 1981 recording) and Jochum/Dresden (when I'm in the mood for speed and maximum drama).

I have Rattle but haven't listened to it yet. I have Furt too but really hate the way he rushes that apocalyptic first climax.

Thanks Sarge. Interesting to hear your views. Just bought the Giulini version which is terrific
Symphonies V, VI, VII - Jochum DGG
Symphony VI - Wand RCA
Symphony IX (Completed) - Rattle EMI
(Stipulating of course that the Jochum DGG set is always an all-around fave) 0:)
Concerning Symphony Zero: I had the great opportunity to hear it performed live a year ago by the Toledo Symphony in the Roman Catholic cathedral there, under Stefan Sanderling, and it was no zero by any means. 0:)
Resurrecting this thread because l want to see others' lists. 8)

OK, eight years later, let's revise. Yes, No. 8 is still my favorite, but let's show a little more love for some of the others.
4 - Abbado / Vienna - I love its swift muscularity, which at the time, was a big change from the general "calm and serene" approach.
6 - Sawallisch / Bavarian State - The first recording that made me really like the Sixth. And the slow movement is among Bruckner's finest.
8 - Haitink / Concertgebouw - Still supreme, after all these years.
8 - Boulez / Vienna - Astonished me when I first heard it. Boulez?
Really? 9 - Haitink / Concertgebouw - Haitink's patience and gentleness are just the tip of the iceberg.

3 - Sinopoli (It's the sweater)
5 - Lim
6 - Klemperer
8 - Karajan (VPO)
9 - Giulini (VPO)
Symphony No. 4 - Bohm/Vienna
Symphony No. 7 - Karajan/Vienna
Symphony No. 8 - Boulez/Vienna
Symphony No. 8 - Celibidache/Munich
Symphony No. 9 - Abbado/Lucerne
Honorable Mention: Symphony No. 8 - Wand/NDR (Live at Lubeck Cathedral)
