What did you think?

An intelligent thread like this lies next to 'Your 2 or 3 favourite symphonies'.

I guess seeing this wouldn't have helped how he felt.

No, I was only 13 when I died but I know his work initially from his recording of the Brahms double with Tortelier under Paul Kletzki; understated and sophisticated.

Not that this is an answer to the OP's question, but...

...one of my favorite all time videos available on youtube is Christian Ferras performing the Sibelius Violin concerto. In fact, that's how I most often experienced that stupendous work (along with the Sony Isaac Stern/Eugene Ormandy/Philadelphia Orchestra cd).

I have a vague recollection of seeing him in Trondheim, Norway sometime in the 70ies, but have no idea of the program or anything else about the concert.

I was debating internally whether to post a remark about all deaths being untimely, and then I read the following typo. At least I think it's a typo.

I hope grinning is not too inappropriate at this moment. That is, I hope Christian would understand if in our general sadness for his passing we were still capable of recognizing and responding to risibility.

Nothing risible in that. Typos are forgivable and understandable in this sort of informal environment.

Also: new erato...wonderful setup you get there.  8)

Thanks. Theres' been some minor upgrades (preamp, a Sony SACD player) since 2009, but what the heck; I use it far more than I use the car so why not put some real money into it?

It's more a Yogi Berraism. For my part, I neither saw Christian in concert before his death or after, but then again I do not share in the general sadness one way or the other.
