It's polling time again. Time to pick your Top 5 Favorite Works of Berg's. There are no stipulations for this poll.

Here are my picks (in no particular order):

Violin Concerto
Three Pieces for Orchestra
Lyric Suite
(doesn't matter about which arrangement --- I love them all)
Wozzeck
Der Wein

Since he wrote so very little (only about 20 works all told), there's not a huge list to choose from. But mine would be: Wozzeck, Lulu, the Chamber Concerto, the Three Pieces for Orchestra, and the Altenberg Lieder. Lyric Suite as a runner up. Not as enamored of the Violin Concerto.

This is true, but it's still fun to think about nonetheless. I can't say I'm a great fan of the Chamber Concerto. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

One day the Chamber Concerto will suddenly hit it for ya and become one of your all time favourites (for at least two weeks).

Nah not the whole opera. The suite as it stands is like the perfect 2nd Viennese school concert work for me.

"5 works" represents ca. 25% of Berg's output, so this one is "mathematically" easier than other such polls  :D...

My choices:

3 Pieces for Orchestra
Wozzeck
Lyric Suite
Violin Concerto
Lulu

Cheers,

If I were into opera, I'm sure I would include the relevant two in this list.

Since I'm not particularly, then its Violin Concerto, Chamber Concerto, Three Pieces for Orchestra, 5 Altenberg Lieder and String Quartet.

As long as you go for a recording with ALL orchestral players vs. the ones with career soloists playing the violin and piano parts....

Try this... members of the Staatskapelle Dresden conducted by Giuseppe Sinopoli:
