Technically an Aussie, but he was raised in New Zealand and considered himself a Kiwi.
His output ran over 2,000 pieces - not all of his manuscripts have been located, and Hill didn't keep proper notes and didn't assign opus numbers, so even dating this leviathanesque output would be impossible. Obviously, the great majority of that heap of compositions will not be much more than exercises - it would be necessary to sort the wheat from the chaff.
He wrote 12 symphonies, concertos, smaller orchestral works.
His chamber output includes 17 string quartet pieces, as well as a septet, six violin sonatas, a piece for cello & violin, etc.
He composed operas and film music.
He had met Tchaikovsky and Richard Straus, and Brahms and Dvorak, being a student of the latter. His long life spanned Romanticism and Modernism.
He was a proponent of composers from "down under" and was fascinated by NZ's Maori people.
In 1887, Hill traveled to Germany to study at the Leipzig Conservatory.
He returned to NZ in 1892, but relocated to Sydney, Australia in 1911.
He married two times, the second was to a composer in her own right, Mirrie Solomon Hill.
