Hello again all!! Please forgive the rather long absence - I have been intending to revisit for quite a while, and here I am! I can't promise as regular a presence here but I look forward to talking to all of you again and enjoying Sarge's banter once again!
For those who don't know me, I'm Daniel, 18 from England, a conductor and composer who is indeed rather keen on Mahler.... and a lot of stuff from the 20th century!
Welcome back, Daniel! The prodigal son returns! 8)
Hello Daniel! How's life been treating you lately? Composed or performed much?
Welcome home, Daniel! ;)
We have been rational about Mahler for months now and I am sick and tired of it!!!

Don't worry, I'm here with my hammer and I'll make sure rationality about Mahler doesn't happen again ;)

I'm OK, not enjoying uni much but am nearly finished writing a viola concerto and am enjoying working with my orchestra I set up and conduct.. we did Nielsen 1 over the winter :)
Why aren't you enjoying university, Daniel? Tough classes? Boring classes? Professors making you write 12-tone music. ;) ;D
I, too, am keen on Mahler, and it would be a joy to hear music by someone influenced by him. There is no composer I am as mad about.
Excellent! Takes the sting out of the Patriots losing today.

Gustav Mahler > Tom Brady

That was a great game, but, truth be told, I'm happy to see Tom Brady go home. I doubt the Broncos can beat Carolina however. If Broncos pull it off, I'd be surprised.
BTW, my change of avatar was done with excellent timing, it would seem.
Welcome back, Daniel! :)
Welcome back! :)
Does this mean we can can continue the Brahms no. 2 blind comparison? 8)
Q
Did I never post those Brahms 2 results? Gosh I was a mess... I do apologise! Has there been a Blind Comparison since my departure? Not that I was keen on them or anything.... ;)
Thank you all for the welcome back :)

Funny you should point that out.. our composition task this year really frustrated me.... 'to write a piece using only 4 pitches for one instrument and two found objects'.... and by found objects, I mean saucepans and frying pans and so forth.. it was not fun. >:D ::) So, compositionally, Manchester doesn't look too promising for me I have to say.... Apart from that, I'm just bored. Not enough to keep me preoccupied which is not helpful when you're missing all the happiness back home..

Actually, that sounds kind of fun for me. :) How long does the work have to be or is the duration not specified? Sometimes putting limitations on yourself can be a good thing and the outcome of the piece could be great. It gets you to think outside of the box. But, yes, I can understand how you're homesick. Hopefully, things will go better for you down the road.
He's back! You have been missed. Glad to see you have returned to CMG-Land. 8)
Just seen this. Delighted to see you back here Daniel. :)

He's not back...he's on hiatus again! :-\
He's 19 - he's off at college becoming mad about girls.
We will never see him . . . again. :blank:
Actually, if Daniel doesn't mind me divulging some personal information: he's got a girlfriend and looks genuinely happy. Also he conducts his own orchestra called the Watford Youth Sinfonia and I believe he still plays percussion in another youth symphony. If this wasn't enough, he's a composer and goes to music school, so, yes, there's plenty of things to keep him occupied. 8)

Mad About Mahler! Beware: such idiotic teachers will drive you insane! ??? ??? ???
Ridiculous assignment! $:) ;)
I am reminded of the following anecdote: the novelist
Sinclair Lewis was once invited to a university to give a talk to aspiring writers.
He began with: "If you're writers, why are you here listening to me? Get out of here, go home, and write something!" 0:)
My training was autodidactic: I had the luck to receive answers to my letters on composition, serialism, etc. from
Alexander Tcherepnin. This is not to say that university programs in Music are not worth your time, but that perhaps you have not found the right one for you. e.g.
Karl Henning seems to have been satisfied (I believe) with his university programs in Music.
