Ramping up my Saturday with boo bams, Burmese gongs, a Japanese lute, Hawaiian gourds and of course bird calls. Wow! Even Denny and his crew outdo themselves here.

And for those that dig nuances in their collection, this one has an audition stamp.
I enjoy this kind of stuff too, along with 60s and 70s Easy Listening/lounge music and the like. Can you recommend some CD compilations? I never really see much of this in the used vinyl bins.

There is this set that I have been piecing together. Plus, they have put a lot of Denny, Baxter, and Lyman on cd.

Finally getting around to my Esquivel lot that I recently acquired. Darrell Brogden of the Retro Cocktail Hour has discussed how Esquivel was doing a lot of cool recordings down in his home country of Mexico and RCA thought that he could be the next "Elvis" level talent to hit the scene as they thought The King would not last. They signed Esquivel up and he recorded a number of what I consider great albums for them, but I will concede that he never did quite overtake the Graceland resident. 8)
If anyone here sees this beauty in their local used record shop, snag it for me and I will pay shipping. Wow!

Listening to a stream of my favorite radio show, The Retro Cocktail Hour, the host pointed out that Ms. Albright had an lp where she teamed up with Henry Mancini. She is the gal that sang at Mothers in the tv show Peter Gunn and it was "must listen" every time she took the stage. So, went Ebaying and found this gem.

The best of two worlds here on one lp that I snapped up at the local shop last night. Secret Agent has that spy sound infused with harpsichord throughout and The Saint is all over the map, but each track is guaranteed to satisfy "spy jazz" listeners. Heck, the track "The Saint Takes A Ride" is worth the price of the whole album.

Bernstein's score is just another incredible layer to this amazing film. Now pass me that Chico Hamilton platter.
And summer, as far as I am concerned, starts NOW! PS: Anyone else think that the Crown Records' label is one of the coolest of all times?

When it comes to Bond "wanna-be" efforts, it does not get much better than The Roland Shaw Orchestra. This is Volume 3 of Bond Thrillers, but when it comes to Bond compilations, its hard to find anyone more prolific than Shaw. Not sure who the singers are that pop up on a number of tracks, but boy do they add to that retro!

I know, I know. Not much of a cover for this lp, but THE MUSIC is, of course, incredible. Barry re-orchestrates (at least that is what it sounds to be) I whole half platter of Bond and on the the other side there are some gems as well. For example, here you get an instrumental version of Goldfinger that lightens up on the guitar, but is still "very Barry" sounding. Of course, I prefer his original efforts, but these are nice to have on the shelf.
My latest spy jazz acquisition landed yesterday. As the back of the lp reads: " The precision of the phrasing is tempered by a sensitivity to sentiment that achieves a most pleasant and unusual effect." Something that covet when looking when looking through the vinyl bins. The highlight? I swear that Parris Mitchell and crew use a banjo on From Russia With love.

What we have here from Britain's Bob Sharples is some splashes of space age pop whimsiness (maybe not enough for all here), pop-up big band motifs, lonely horns and swatches of very high grade elevator ride music. And the vocals from The Sandmen (four guys and two gals) simply swoon. In short, excellent listening. Heck, cover alone was worth the purchase!
Some decent jazzy spy music with an occasional sci-fi/Dr. Who-like garnishes here and there. Makes me want to have a little Harry Palmer fest.

Thanks, Sarge. These lps are wonderful stuff with very talented musicians that filled a niche of music that I cannot get eough of. Especially the spy/crime jazz lps. Speaking of which.
Here is why pursuing the usually lost cause of digging through every overly dug through bin of records while strolling through a Brass Armadillo antique mall can pay off. Filed between a Mac Davis and a Lyndon B. Johnson speech record I found a minty copy of this fabulous "Merc". Shot! Score!

Featuring the likes of Mambo #5, this lp makes you feel like you are sitting at a table for two twenty feet from the music. Grab one of these if you see it in the bins as the music is simply electrifying.

Hope you weekend finds you well. Mine is obviously still on track with this wonderful lp. Says on the back: "This is a new Orthophonic High Fidelity recording designed for the phonograph of today or tomorrow....You can buy today, without fear of obsolescence in the future."

The addition of the Gene Lowell Singers on this fabulous (cannot not be overstated) lp is the true treat here. I wish I could track down more about them. They almost sound like the folks that sang the Flintstones or Jetson themes. Also, Hal Mooney's arrangements are top flight and will make your speakers stand up to attention. Oh, and bongos can be found here as well.

Maybe my favorite title for an album in the RCH/lounge world and have lifted the needle and let Andre Previn's track, "Like Young", swing three times in a row. If you own this one, you understand.
Also, always a treat to hear Shelly Manne on the drums.
A wonderful pair here. Though the "hypno" cover edition might look more attractive, the "Hollywood, Broadway, and Television" platter seems to hold together more. Either way, think big band with an overlay elevator-esque orchestral strings. The "hypno" throws in some random sound effects such as barking dogs to seagulls and traffic sounds while the "orange burst" mostly garnishes with interesting percussion. Plus, the later has the themes to The Untouchables and Mr. Lucky!
I enjoy listening to classical music outside of my "lounge" genre based music. When gathering lps in the classical music realm (you want to talk about crates of records that go untouched in stores) I navigate toward mono recordings save some Mercury pressings that I just love. My taste for sound may be considered flawed by some, but that is the way it is. However, I decided to do a little test driving today with two RCA pressings back in the "lounge" world and I have to say that in this case the Living Stereo is a much more enjoyable listen for me.

The Denver area has two big record shows per year. On my recent pilgrimage I was almost shut out until I decided to dig through one last batch of 45's. $3 later I was heading out the door feeling that my trip was justified as this suite delivers some over the top "out there" music. Would love to now find the full lp.
