The jazz board needed some more silly polls!

I'm not a huge Mingus fan (although I do like The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady quite a bit), so I chose Blakey's Moanin'.

Ditto. I do really the version from the Mingus Big Band.

Don't remember ever hearing either version, but I like Blakeley more than Mingus.

The Mingus "Moanin'" is the one from the Blues and Roots album, right? He hasn't recorded the Bobby Timmons tune that Blakey did somewhere, has he?

I voted for the Mingus track, even though I love both artists enormously.

I love Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, and their Moanin' is fantastic work from the whole group (and quite a group it was, with Morgan, Golson, Timmons, Merritt, and Blakey himself) - but the intensity of Mingus is something else.

Correct. Maybe I should have posted audio clips!

I think I'll have to vote Mingus. Moanin' (Timmons) is pretty freaking great, but it isn't my favorite Timmons composition or Blakey album; for the latter, I prefer Mosaic, Roots & Herbs, and a couple others.

Tough decision though. What jerk started this poll?!?!

Mingus, no contest. That is one of my all time favorite jazz tracks.

That ridiculous (in a good way) baritone sax opening, and then only Mingus could come up with giving that gorgeous counter-melody to two trombones in unison, genius. And the whole track swings like there's no tomorrow. Whole album does. Awesome.

The Timmons "Moanin" with its call-and-response would have fit well on the same album as "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting".

But those are the Timmons (Blakey) tune, Bill. The Mingus Moanin' is a different piece altogether.

The Tjader is the same as the (Timmons) Blakely I believe.  Did you listen through the whole thing for the background vibes?  Throw me some breadcrumbs my friend if I am not following your insight. :)

I don't really remember Mingus' version, but Blakey's is hard to forget, especially Lee Morgan and "play your instrument...".

Loads of love for the Ming, but in this case, Bobby Timmons' tune and the great arrangement for the Messengers are better ... in fact one of my all-time-favorite jazz originals, I dare say! And then having Lee Morgan and Benny Golson play it won't do no harm, either!

Mingus, though, is firmly in my top five of jazz musicians (the others being: Miles, Trane, Monk, Pres ... followed closely by Ellington, Armstrong, Basie, Bechet, Ornette, Cecil, Dolphy - guess that would be the top twelve, then, though why is Sonny Rollins missing? And Henry Threadgill? And Roscoe Mitchell? Hm ... not so easy).

Blakey on the other hand is just one of many beloved hard bop musicians, some of those would of course make my extended favourites list - Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, Lee Morgan, Horace Silver, Clifford Jordan ... not to forget Kenny Dorham, who I'd rather file under bebop if I had to ... and Thad Jones, Clifford Brown, Max Roach. So many to chose from and whose music to enjoy!  ;D

Brian, this could be like collecting the Mahler hammer for you.  Just how many versions of Moanin' can you put on the shelf (of either)? ;D
