Title: Ultimate Bruckner symphony poll -- truly ultimate
Post by: some guy on June 28, 2016, 05:55:48 AM
I know, dead horse.

My use of the word "ultimate," which does have a meaning, and actual real genuine meaning, is my reminder to myself to give over the thwackety-thwacking.

#00 only.

The rest are way too loud and, if listened to on speakers after 10pm, would wake up my flatmates (this has happened before). Bruckner on headphones is, of course, preposterous.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

I heard the Seventh in a cathedral once. Now any other venue is preposterous!

...but, uh, I do mostly listen to Bruckner on headphones  :o

I understand the sentiment, but Bruckner on headphones can be a most contemplative experience.  0:)

I can listen to any of them any time I want, but I don't want to listen to some of them as often as others. . . I suppose the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th are the ones I'm most likely to end up listening. I think the last time I've been listening to any of Bruckner's symphonies was some time last winter, the 8th in Boulez & Segerstam's recordings.

I know, dead horse.

I beat it anyway.

I voted for 00 through 8. Only with 9 do I have to be in a special apocalyptic mood. The rest I can listen to anytime (as long as Mrs. Rock is still up, anyway. Bruckner disturbs her sleep; he penetrates walls like no other composer).

Indeed. 9 is the greatest and my favorite,  and the one I listen to least,  by far. Except maybe 2.

I just realized that I probably listen to 2 more often than any of the others.

Strange, that.

Not strange at all!  The Second Symphony is an all-around fave: but really, any Bruckner symphony can be an all-around fave!  0:)

Nos. 1-5, 8, 9 and the Scherzo from No.7. And the Masses, and the Te Deum, and the Psalms. Any time, any place.

6&9
If you wanted to listen to 8 or 5, say, why couldn't you?

Very mysterious that you report only being able to listen to 6 & 9 if you wanted to.

If you wanted to listen to 1 or 3, you could, surely.

I voted for all of them because they are all on my iPod. I chose to neglect the scenario in which I am not able to listen to any music due to work or some other prior engagement.

Seems to me "Can you listen to Bruckner on headphones?" would have been a more divisive poll!

I don't know about you guys, but there are moments (many moments) in which the last thing I would listen to is to a Bruckner symphony (any Bruckner symphony). Unfortunately, the poll will not let me vote for "none of the above".... And I do love Bruckner...

But those are the times when you do not want to listen to a Bruckner symphony. The poll is only concerned with the times when you do wish to listen to them.  ;)

What would keep me from listening to a particular one if I want to? Almost all obstacles (not enough time, neighbors or family dislike loud brass passages etc.) seems to apply to all of them. Except that one needs 20 min. more for the 8th than for the 1st, but none is short or soft.

Interesting version of "Which of these Bruckner symphonies can you listen to any time you want?"

Furthest thing from my head when I made the post, that's for sure.

The symphonies I know the least are 0, 00, and the 2nd. I plan on listening to the 2nd today at some point to get reacquainted with it. It's been too long. The same goes for 0 and 00.

Nos 5,8 and 9 are IMHO the greatest but No.3 gets my 'listen anytime' vote, especially in the George Szell recording.
