80 (which badly needs a nickname to encapsulate its eccentricities and power!)
82 "Bear"
93 "Flatulent"

If Jessop had allowed five, 80 and 93 would have made my list. Even with three, I had to think long and hard before eliminating them.

So, my hundreds of Haydn recordings have suddenly disappeared from the earth, and only parts of 3 of them remain. Which parts do I wish they were?

45, simply because it is brilliant from beginning to end.
92, it is a non-stop array of unique little items which add up to a great trip.
100, because dammit, I like Turkish percussion and always will.

I picked 45, 88 and 102. As essential for me I'd add also

103
104
99
97
92
90
86
83
82
80
70
44
31
...

There are few Haydn symphonies I could do without but if I keep thinking about ones I want to keep in favoritest lists I will end up with about 50 or so...

Haha! I picked 2, secure in the knowledge that a third one could be potentially any other one! 52 and 92 aaaaand all the rest. 8)

I do believe Haydn wrote by far the most interesting symphonies in the latter half of the 18th century.  :)

I think 6/7/8 and as far as I recall also 3 are stronger than 1 (do not remember 9).
39 has two of the best outer movements of the egdy Sturm&Drang type but the andante is trite and disappointing, so for me this will always be slightly behind 44, 45 etc.
As 67 and 68 have been mentioned, I should probably revisit them (I have most of the 60s numbers as somewhat deservedly lesser known in mind).

Yeah, I said "favorite", not "best". 67 is notable for two features - a witty col legno passage in the slow movement, and a bonus slow movement in the middle of the finale.

Honestly, except for 82, I cannot remember any of them. So I have been listening to some of your favorites. No bad ones, but I have enjoyed 39 and 45 most of all so far. Fey's style can be an aggressive approach at times, but it's so well performed and the adjustments Fey makes add to the brilliance of Haydn's symphonies. I know my thoughts are not shared by all, but I've enjoyed the majority of these recordings. I always like to recommend these for those interested in first exploring Fey (and apparently I'm a fan of his Haydn Beach Music Series.  ;D )...

I remember not liking 22 that much, but I only heard it once and it was over two years ago so I should listen to it again.

But I am happy to see that someone else picked 60 besides me! The last (6th) movement is hilarious (with the violins being required to "re-tune" just after the introduction). Even without that, though, I think it would still make a top 3 list for me. I like 100 a lot, too.

What sentimental reasons?

Karl Munchinger's recording of 100 was the first classical record I owned. Antonio Janigro's recording of The Philosopher I picked up shortly after. Played those albums hundreds of times in my teens and twenties, even after I acquired more Haydn and different recordings of the same works. They're just part of my dna now.

I'm still working through Symphonies 82-104, though not in that order. The top contenders so far have been 97, 98 and 102. Honourable mentions to 83, 92 and 100.

I still have four symphonies in E flat (84, 91, 99 and 103) and five symphonies in D (86, 93, 96, 101 and 104) to go. I hadn't realised when I chose my method that I would be leaving 4 of the symphonies from the 2nd London trip until rather late in the process. I fully expect there to be a lot of high rankings in that group.

I know it won't let you choose five, but I was hoping you'd simply list them in a post.

May Providence keep them far distant one from another!

My coinage...because the first movement's second theme reminds me of a cat's meow.

*Listens to some of 1st movement of no.99*

Not completely crazy.

Incidentally, if we were going purely on first movements I think no.99 would be a shoo-in.

Yes, it is brilliant and if this poll restricted us to only one symphony, I'd probably pick 99 for that reason.

I love the first mvmt. of the 99 but I don't get the cat/meow connection at all...

Some hear it, some don't...but I recall the first time I heard the symphony (Jochum/DG) and it immediately reminded me of cats.

The first occurence is at 3:38 in the Davis performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twkF_rip0YY

Is Davis a fave recording? I was thinking of listening later and waffling between Davis, Krips, Fey, and Szell...not a bad lineup.

I do like Davis (have the CD) but Fey's has a quite prominent clarinet that's unique. I love both...Szell, not so much in this symphony. Makes me sad, and feeling vaguely traitorous though.

Oh, I love that part! Never thought about cats, but the change of theme and tempo always appealed greatly. I didn't know that's the part you meant. Cats, eh... hmmmm :D

I listened to all of my top 5 today, and in the end I decided to vote for 2 here and just "waste" a vote. I wasn't prepared to separate the other candidates.

My choices were no.93 and no.102.

That's right, in the end there is The Fart and The True Miracle.
