Ahem, cough, cough.

John Adams has composed two violin concerti, the second being Dharma at Big Sur. Yes, it is not titled 'concerto,' and yes, it is for a six-string electric violin, but nonetheless....

Of his two, I think Dharma at Big Sur is possibly his masterpiece -- to date, anyway.

OK...modified to reflect that, as well as his newest VC, that Scheherezade (however you spell it) thing.

Barber's VC gets my vote and will always get my vote if we're talking strictly American VCs. I like Bernstein's Serenade a lot as well, which is a VC in all but a name.

Anything that makes you choose from a set list is immediately irreparably flawed.

Except that this list includes "other" which offers a bit of scope . . .

My favorite American violin concerto is the Barber and the Schuman...

Two.  My two favorite American violin concertos are the Barber, Schuman, Adams...

Three. I have three favorite American violin concertos.  They are the Barber, Schuman, Adams, Rochberg....

Four. There four that are among my favorites.  They include the Barber, Schuman, Adams, Rochberg, Carter..... :(

Five. There are five. They include but not limited to...whatever.

I voted "other". I mean, no David Diamond, Stanley Wolfe, Bernstein "Symposium"...

But my preferred workis probably Carter's VC.

The Barber and the Schuman sounds like the title of a comic opera. However, they are two separate concertos, so why do you list one more than the number you say in each sentence here?

Other. Korngold Violin Concerto op.35, composed in 1945. (Korngold became an American citizen in 1943.)
