Title: Top 10 Elliott Carter pieces!
Post by: Thatfabulousalien on December 01, 2016, 12:32:19 PM
Ok, this thread is created to give me more recommendations to what to listen to from his output but it is ultimately a top 10 list.

Currently, I really like:

Concerto For Orchestra
Piano Concerto
Sandpiper
The Double Concerto
Elegy (for string orchestra)
Sound-Fields

Oh, yum, I thread I really like. I'll start off the top with my absolute faves, even though I haven't reached 10 yet, and fill in later:

Concerto for Orchestra (not one of yours, Bruce?)
Quartets 1-2
Variations for Orchestra
Double Concerto
Cello Sonata
Eight Timpani Pieces
Purcell Fantasy

We did the Top 5 Carter a while back. Reproducing my list from that one:

String Quartet #1
Piano Concerto (the big one)
Symphonia
Boston Concerto
Variations for Orchestra

and now adding 5 more:

String Quartet #3
String Quartet #4
Night Fantasies
Concerto for Orchestra
Symphony of Three Orchestras
(just now getting to know this one, but I'm pretty sure it belongs)

As a bonus, I'd like to add one of those brief Ligeti-style late piano pieces, like Catenaires or 90+.

Oh yes, could easily have included it, along with many others.

These are my "top 5" from the previous poll:

- A Symphony of three orchestras
- Oboe concerto
- Violin concerto
- Syringa
- Cello sonata

To which I add:

- Esprit rude / esprit doux
- Piano sonata
- Penthode
- Enchanted preludes
- Double concerto

And that makes ten.  :)
