Title: Top 5 Schubert works
Post by: André on November 13, 2017, 03:38:16 PM
Favourite Schubert works. There are threads on Schubert in general, or some individual works, but I don't think there is a « top 5 » (or 10 or whatever).

Here are mine:

- Sonata D. 959 in A
- Quartet no 14 in d minor, Death and the Maiden
- Symphony no 2 in B flat
- Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus
- Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, lied for soprano, clarinet and piano

I chose one per genre. Not necessarily the 'greatest', as I don't think that kind of thing can be determined. It's not a condition, I could have chosen 3 for piano, 3 vocal works etc. It's definitely not easy to restrict oneself to just 5. Excepting the youthful 2nd symphony, I went for late works.

String Quintet in C (his masterwork IMO)
Piano Trio no. 2 in E flat
String Quartet no. 15 in G
Symphony no. 2 in B flat*
Piano Sonata no. 21 in B flat

*I'm with you on this one, André. I wasn't expecting much of this work but was bowled over by it.

If only he could've lived just five more years... :'(

Quintet D956
Quartet (No.15) D887
Die schöne Müllerin D795
Drei Klavierstücke D946
Piano Trio (No.1) D899
Notturno D897

Glad me & Sgt Rock got here before the Piano Trio No.2 crowd! (I love both, but No.1 has a special place in my heart and most of the better tunes, regardless of what say those who look down their stuffy aristocratic noses at it in favour of D929 >.>)

I like more Schubert than Mozart. I feel more identified with his music. Having said that, I include these masterpieces:

String quintet
String quartet 15
Piano trio 2
Symphony 9 'The Great'
Mass in E flat major, D. 950

Quintet D. 956
Klavierstucke D. 946
Impromptu D. 935 No. 1
Sonata D. 960
Divertissement a la hongroise D. 818

honorable mention: Symphonies 2 and 4
technicality mention: the Hungarian Melody D. 817 which was then used in the finale of D. 818

That was going to be my honourable mention but I already had six >.>

There are too many miracles in Schubert's output.
I could easily select 5 superb songs and the job would be done.

After some thinking though, I selected these:

Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern D 797
String Quartet in D minor "Der Tod und das Mädchen" D 810
Winterreise D 911
String Quintet in C major D 956
Sonata in C minor D 958

String Quintet
String Quartet D 887
Winterreise
Violin Fantasy
Sonata D 959

Trio preference: clearly E flat major D 929

Special mention (choral): "Gesang der Geister über den Wassern" D 714 and "Nachtgesang im Walde" D 913

Winterreise
Die schone Mullerin
Schwanengesang
Wanderer Fantasy
Prometheus

Idk, it's all about the songs for me. Schubert is one of my "song composers" along with Ives and to a lesser extent; Gershwin (as he's more in the jazz/showtunes realm)

Piano Sonata D960
Symphony No. 9
Piano Trio No. 1 (cheers Sarge and amw: a special place in my heart and most of the better tunes, indeed, indeed, Amen!)
Piano Quintet "Trout"
String Quartet "Rosamunde"
String Quintet

Picking only one Lied or Lieder-cycle would have been a gross injustice to all others so I left them all aside.

String Quintet in C major, D 956
Piano Sonata in B-flat major, D. 960

Nachthelle, D892, Schreier

Nacht und Traüme D 827 - Stich-Randall singing, or at a pinch an early FiDi on EMI Schubert Lieder on Record, the first set.

Die Wegweisser (Winterreise) (Schreier/Richter)

D 840 (as played by Richter Paris 1961)

Hard to pick a 5th. Maybe the variations in D 850 as played by Richter in Prague. Or the impromptu D 946/1.

Nacht und Traüme D 827 - Stich-Randall singing ...
I actually own that recording (Teresa Stich-Randall being a personal favourite) , but haven't really paid much attention to it. Thanks for pointing it out.

QuoteD 840 (as played by Richter Paris 1961)
It'll turn out that D 840 is one of the best-liked Schubert sonatas by almost everyone!  :) I don't know that Paris recording by Richter; his live 1979 recording from Leverkusen on Philips, OTOH, is superb IMHO
