Our goal is to select 20 sacred choral works and then vote to determine the top five compositions.
Selection Rules:
1. You may select one or two works on a daily basis.
2. Once you have selected a particular work, you may not pick that work again - it's one and done.
3. If and when that work is selected by two fellow game participants, it will be game ready.
My two picks for today:
Bach - Mass in B minor
Mozart - Great Mass in C minor
Looking forward to your selections!!
Beethoven: Missa solemnis
Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem
Pärt - Kanon Pokajanen
Tallis - Spem in Alium
I'm in.
Beethoven - Missa Solemnis
Pergolesi - Stabat mater
EDIT: The Pergolesi is not strictly choral, is that allowed, Sammy? If not, replace it with Haydn - Missa In tempore belli
Bach - Mass in B minor
Mozart - Great Mass in C minor
Listened to parts of both this past week.
Lassus: Lagrime di San Pietro
Schoenberg: Psalm 130
Durufle Requiem
Faure Requiem
Beethoven: Missa Solemnis
Haydn: Harmoniemesse
Rakhmaninov: All-night Vigil
Liszt: Via Crucis
Goodness, you guys are faster than a speeding bullet - already 18 selections!

Yes,
Bruckner Te Deum.
Karl Henning:
Nuhro!
I find the Karl Henning entry problematic. It's like a judge being one of the contestants. Also, Karl being a veteran and well-liked GMG member, personal considerations could influence voting patterns. How do you guys look at it? What does Karl think? I'm going to leave Karl off the list until I get some feedback.
Bach St Matthew Passion
Mozart Requiem

No. Good for a poll, bad for a game.

I'm fine with it. I don't think Karl will vote himself.

I agree with you. I thought it odd when someone put his name forward in the last game, and see it a superfluous vote made with a wink.
My thought is that it was inappropriate to put a member forward. If I vote for Mozart, Haydn is not here to be miffed. Do I have to slight Henning to place my vote for Mozart? Do I have to slight other composers who may be participating here if I vote for Henning?
I think "present company excluded" should be the rule.
Guillaume de Machaut: Messe de Nostre Dame
Claudio Monteverdi: Vespro della Beata Vergine

I shan't vote for myself; and I will under no circumstances be miffed.
I would not be miffed, to be (so to speak) disqualified from the running, either. Use your own discretion, be at liberty.
Haydn - Harmoniemesse
Mozart - Requiem

Boy, I love making numbers decisions - hate making people decisions. However, I agree with Baron Scarpia. Since most of the feedback was not to include, and Karl seems to be neutral about it, I'm using my semi-executive postion to exclude. By the way, on another game on the internet of living composers, Karl was one the composers I nominated. I want to clearly state that compositional quality has nothing to do with my concerns.
Okay, back to Cato. Feel free to make another selection on this fine day - upper 70's here in Albuquerque.

Karl, with regard to these "games", you're out there with
Beethoven, it seems... ;)
I'm already formulating my strategy. It appears that Mozart Requiem is soon to advance, and that the Mozart vote will be split between the mass in c-minor and the requiem. I will try to advance things like the Bruckner Te Deum and the Beethoven Missa Solemnis, so that the cacophony vote is also split. :)

Some of us like cacophonous works like Mozart's.

Do you know the series from a few years ago
In Plain Sight?
Does
Mahler's Eighth Symphony qualify as a sacred choral work?
If not, then make it
Cesar Franck's Psalm 150 !

Yes, I remember In Plain Sight. Some of it was filmed in Albuquerque; so was some of Breaking Bad. Actually, the the home used for Breaking Bad is right in my immediate neighborhood.

My wife soured on
Breaking Bad after the third year, I think: she just found it had become for her too dark and gruesome. She still much prefers
In Plain Sight.
I like both, and followed
Breaking Bad all the way through! 8)

Voting for Rachmaninov's Vigil
New candidate: Franz von Suppe's Requiem (A favorite of Brahms!)
Honestly, methinks there's a little too much protestation (Henning's Nuhro is too contemporary, Pergolesi's Stabat mater is not choral enough) in what's supposed to be an innocuous, inconsequential and fun game. ;D
Nay, the objection was not to Nuhro being contemporary; only that a highly interested party is a participant 0:)

That's what I actually meant. So what? Can't they trust you not to vote for your own work? Or would you take it as a personal offense if somebody doesn't vote for it? Or would somebody felt obliged to vote for it just because? I doubt on all accounts.

I didn't notice that
Sammy had commented on the matter. I like the work very much indeed, of course. But if it's fit to participate in this game, then all sorts of works with at least two vocalists are too, like
Pärt's
Stabat Mater for soprano, alto, tenor, violin, viola & cello. . .

Then if the rule is "choral" strictly and by the book, most nominations should be discarded because they involve a non-choral element: orchestra. ;D

Just throwing an idea out there....would you rename the game 'Interactive Sacred Choral/Vocal Works Game'?
I don't quite get the (point of) the system, but I hope this means these pieces are now "game ready"..... 8)
Lassus - Lagrime di San Pietro
Tallis - Spem in Alium
Q
Among the four works nominated after my reply no. 85, it is Stravinsky's Threni that gets a 3rd nomination and entry in the show/game.
These are the 20 works we have selected for game play:
Bach - Mass in B minor
Bach - St. John Passion
Bach - St. Matthew Passion
Beethoven - Missa Solemnis
Brahms - Ein Deutsches Requiem
Bruckner - Mass no. 2 in E minor
Durufle - Requiem
Handel - Messiah
Haydn - Harmoniemesse
Haydn - Die Schöpfung (The Creation)
Guillaume de Machaut - Messe de Nostre Dame
Monteverdi - Vespro della Beata Vergine
Mozart - Great Mass in C minor
Mozart - Requiem in D minor
Ockeghem - Missa prolationum
Pergolesi - Stabat Mater
Poulenc - Stabat Mater
Rachmaninov - All-night Vigil
Stravinsky - Threni
Verdi - Requiem
Well, it's bedtime for me so I'll start the game in a few hours. Concerning Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, it's sacred with voices so I allowed it with the assumption that the participants would decide through the selection process whether to give it the green light to game ready status. Although I understand that some might have objections, it's a done deal. As for me, I'll be concentrating on game voting and overall maintenance.

Your Lassus and Tallis selections were 2nd nominations; it takes 3 nominations to gain entry to the actual game. In addition, the 3rd Threni nomination ended the selection process with the 20th pick. If you give another look at the first posting of this thread, I think your confusion will vanish.
If the voting is still going on, my choice for today is:
Fauré: Requiem
Janacek: Glagolitic Mass

The selection process is already completed, and the voting round has already begun.
