Title: The String Quartet Game (Round Two)
Post by: Sammy on April 18, 2018, 10:35:37 AM
We have arrived at Round Two of The String Quartet Game.  As with the previous round, there are 20 string quartets for your voting consideration.  The 3 string quartets ending up with the highest scores will advance to the final round.

Voting Rules:

1.  You may vote once daily.

2.  When you vote, you will have 10 upward points to use as you please except that no work may receive more than 5 points.

3.  Round Two ends with the first work to reach 100 points.

4.  The Half-Time Adjustment is in effect.  With the first work to garner 50 points, the 7 works having the lowest scores will be eliminated from the game; this number could rise if there are ties toward the bottom of the board.

Understood.  The only time I make mistakes is when I am sober and feeling rushed.

I was just thinking that if a Haydn quartet from each round made the finale, Haydn would have 10 of the thirty slots.  That is something to ponder.

Haydn quartets will cannibalize themselves. And the ABH crowd will push some avant-garde work with a vengence.  >:D

Anyone But Haydn. I think that means you  :)

I have always liked that here in GMG one could really feel to post freely on whatever kind of music. Now things are subtly changing...

I have never got the sense that this is changing....what makes you say this?

Well, I could be wrong but some ironic posts...here and there...in this thread but also in the WAYLTN thread re. Adámek's SQ. Never seen them before here.
My feeling is that contemporary/avangarde music is somehow "tolerated" by the great majority of posters in GMG until certain thresholds are not crossed over, such as "rating" avangarde pieces in direct comparison with "traditional" ones.
But as I said, I could (and hope to) be wrong.

Well, I've been here 15 years now, and IMO, contemporary music is more 'tolerated' than ever before. There has always been a dichotomy between traditional and avant-garde, not violent like I've seen in other places, just a division of tastes. Now, we have more people who claim to enjoy both! Imagine that! :)

To your point, I like the hell out of Shostakovich and Ernest Bloch, to name two people who were writing in my lifetime (not avant-garde, I know, but just an example), but when forced to make a direct comparison with Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven, I have to go with the latter. It is the point of the game, to force you to make choices. I don't prefer Haydn because he makes me comfortable somehow, but because I really do like his music. The quartet on offer here, Op 77 #1 had a mate in F major and in 1799 when they were released, it was a stunner for the crowd. Just saying, everything is relative. I have no problem getting out of the here and now. Not least as self-defense. :)

These three works will advance:

Dvořák - String Quartet no. 13 in G major, op. 106
Haydn - String Quartet in G major, op. 77/1 "Lobkowitz"
Schubert - String Quartet no. 12 in C minor, D 703 "Quartettsatz"

Great choices!  The final group of 30 works are going to make for some hard voting choices.

WHAT? TASTES DIFFER? WHY WASN'T I TOLD?

If Ligeti ever wrote a Quartet on the level of the Dvorak a lot of us would be happy to vote for it. You are the one imputing motives here.

You say it's merely personal taste, but Ligeti's Second Quartet is by any measure one of the most widely admired pieces in the genre of the last 50 years.  It's been recorded more often than any quartet by Nyman or Glass, and is probably performed more often too, though I don't have any data at hand to examine on that front.

It's a shame. If one of the most popular post-war composers can't get through with one of their finest works, then Schoenberg, Ives, Webern etc. don't stand a chance. The prospect of a finale along the lines of "Haydn vs. Haydn vs. Haydn vs. Haydn vs. Haydn vs. Haydn vs. Beethoven vs. Haydn vs. Mozart vs. Haydn vs. Schubert vs. Haydn vs. Haydn vs. Haydn vs. Dvorak" doesn't make me particularly excited to participate in the rest of the game. I mean, it's a forum game, it doesn't really impact my life if that's how it ends up, but it does seem to be a foregone conclusion.

Exactly.  It's just frustrating to see music that I love and admire thrown out of consideration as beyond the pale by others.

The split is not between people who only love the traditional (some mostly diatonic/triadic post-tonal examples like Glass aside) and people who only love the modern, but between people who are interested in the whole range of the tradition and those to whom tradition means something closed off to certain developments.

This is a very manichaean, B&W view. I listened to both the Adamek and the Ligeti. I didn't dislike them, but didn't have an epiphany either. I don't care one bit if they are « one of the most admired pieces in the genre in the last 50 years ». I had submitted Dusapin, but nobody followed me on that. I didn't make a fuss about it.

The Takemitsu piece, Landscape, was also my submission, and I fully expected that it would not go very far.  I'm even happy that it made it past the mid-round culling.

There are certainly contemporary pieces I can respect but don't really care for, so I understand that, but we've gone two rounds and so far we've seen the elimination of both of Ligeti's quartets and Schoenberg's Fourth.  I'm not very hopeful about the final list.

I think by choosing 3 from each list, where in each list there are Haydn and Beethoven (et al) quartets, the repertoire that is recorded more often and that people generally have more exposure to will probably be the top 3 that get selected. This is 3 out of 20, that's a really tough game!

Just another thought: I think the string quartet one of the most controversial repertoires within classical music. I once said that the current era of music is the era where string quartets as a medium for composition and string quartets as an ensemble have probably never been so good. However, the implication that the wealth of string quartets in the last couple of decades can outshine the amazing achievements of composers such as Haydn, Mozat and Beethoven and even all the way up to Bartók and Schoenberg, was probably too bold a statement for some.

I think the original list of nominations was a very good reflection of the history and diversity of this genre, while the shortlist that's developing will depressingly homogeneous by comparison if current voting patterns continue.

After waking up and reading the bickering posts, I have four things to say.

1.  Advancing to the final round:

Dvořák - String Quartet no. 13 in G major, op. 106
Haydn - String Quartet in G major, op. 77/1 "Lobkowitz"
Schubert - String Quartet no. 12 in C minor, D 703 "Quartettsatz"

2.  Game outcomes reflect the preferences of the GMG members who participated in the voting; it's that simple.  Arguing over the merits of particular works won't change anything.  Further, preference rules the day, not perceived merit.

3.  Ligeti's Quartet missed out on going to the final round by the smallest of margins, and I don't consider it a foregone conclusion that no modernist works will advance to the finale.  Just on my own, I could insure modernist works will advance and I'm only one voter.

4.  Round Three will begin later today - stay cool.

For me it's more that I don't vote for the "old masters" because I know everyone else will. They're secure. I'm convinced we will see a Haydn quartet advance in each of these primary rounds, and Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert etc. are pretty much guaranteed to go through with multiple entries also. Whether I think it's wonderful music or not (and by and large I do) I'd rather go to bat for stuff I love that also needs help.

Having only 3 of 20 advances means only strong consensus candidates will make it. Every game has its rules, which shape the outcome. Maybe a future game for quartets written after 1900 will allow us to express our preference for more modern works.

There was a strong consensus among a group of voters that Ligeti's Second Quartet was worthy of inclusion.  The problem is not that it didn't get sufficient support, but that there was an equal push on the other side to ensure it didn't get in at all.  Forcing post-1900 works into a different group is not a good solution.  I want to see a list that captures the full vitality of the repertoire, and this list is shaping up to be anything but that.

I love the works of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, I nominated pieces by all three, and I think that a string quartet list without them is as poor as one without Ligeti or Schoenberg or Webern.

Just for the record here's the final board:

Arensky - String Quartet no. 2 in A minor, op. 35 - 61
Bax - String Quartet no. 1 in G major - 10
Beethoven - String Quartet no. 16 in F major, op. 135 - 57
Crumb - Black Angels - 39
Dvořák - String Quartet no. 13 in G major, op. 106 - 102 (+3)
Ferneyhough - String Quartet no. 6 - 30

Haydn - String Quartet in G major, op. 77/1 "Lobkowitz" - 100 (+2)
Janácek - String Quartet no. 2 "Intimate letters" - 65
Ligeti - String Quartet no. 2 - 95
Schubert - String Quartet no. 12 in C minor, D 703 "Quartettsatz" -  103 (+5)
Shostakovich - String Quartet no. 12 in D flat major, op. 133 - 19
Takemitsu - Landscape for String Quartet - 15
Weinberg - String Quartet no. 11, op. 89 - 15

Ligeti got 95 votes - 6X Weinberg and Takemitsu; nearly 5X Shostakovich  - how can you complain that Ligeti was shunned when he got the fourth highest total?

I didn't vote for them either, choosing to support Arensky, Weinberg and Shostakovich - but they did worse than Ligeti.
Shostakovich not doing so well is pretty surprising, I always thought him among the most popular 20th century composers, but maybe the 12th just isn't a very popular quartet, I don't know—since the list was made up of single vote nominations in the first place it's hard to tell what outside of the tried and true is going to get the most support, though we've already seen that nominations don't always equate to votes, I've even had to neglect composers I nominated because I felt others were more deserving of votes. Ligeti is very popular among 20th century composers of a "progressive" stripe, maybe the most popular of all, and the 2nd quartet is his most major and most well known work in the genre, both of which probably count a great deal towards it being the most strongly supported of the modern selections in this round. But it's also the case that one voter can't hold up more than two selections on their own, whichever way you split it someone's going to have to get two points, maybe even one, but even then it's no guarantee, even with a consistent stream of fives advancement is not assured, as we see with Ligeti in this case. Them's the breaks; with only three in every twenty making it through to the next stage it's very exclusive.

Just to be clear: At no point in this discussion has it been my intent to complain about other people's voting, I'm just making the observation that the way things are going I don't think it's going to be a very exciting list going into the next stage of the game.

I am not implying that at all, I am saying that they took the opportunity to push Ligeti out of the game rather than continue to support the works they had supported before.  Surely you see that this is effectively voting against Ligeti's work?

I didn't even know how many votes Ligeti had, I only looked at his total to see how many more votes he got than Weinberg.  I ignored Ligeti throughout the game since I knew I wasn't voting for him under any circumstances.  I didn't push him out of the game - I forgot he was even there.

Why single out Ligeti? There were 16 others that didn't make it to the final round, many with far fewer votes than Ligeti. Do you really feel that frustrated because in an innocuous and inconsequential game (game!) your favorite didn't win a place in the final?

Because I think it's a masterpiece and a list of string quartets without it is poorer for it, and because of the way it was shoved out of the way at the last second.

You tend to take the GMG things much more seriously than they should be taken (in general, not only in this thread). Relax, man, there are far worse things that can happen in real life than Ligeti being "shoved out" in an internet forum. You could use a little bit of nonchalance and detachment.

Let's assume that you are correct that the last two or three voters were trying to insure that the Ligeti didn't advance.  There's nothing wrong with that - a voter's motivation is his/her own business as long as the game rules are followed.  One of the basic voter motivations is to try to influence game outcomes; I do it quite often.

If you should apologize for anything, it would be for accusing me of purposely denying Ligeti a spot among the final three.

As I have said I was ignoring Ligeti, did not know how close he was to 100 and did not vote for Schubert and Haydn instead of Ligeti (I forgot he was even there), but because I like those works and knew Weinberg, Arensky and Shostakovich were not going to make it, and wanted to advance those works that I liked the best to the final round.

I didn't support the 12th because I focused on 2 works I really wanted to see going to the next round. Two more DSCH quartets will come up later (8 and 15) and one of them will have my vote on every single day. Which means one of the two I supported in this round might not get my vote.  It's a tactical game. In order to win the battle you must lose some soldiers, however good they are.

Arensky +13

I was pulling for Mozart and Janacek. When Mozart got wiped out I was pulling for Janacek and Beethoven, and Beethoven was initially not doing so well. When I saw Janacek in a hopeless position and Beethoven at the top I wanted to be done with it.

If I wanted to sabotage anyone it would have been Haydn, due to my annoyance at the fact that the finale is looking like a lineup with multiple Haydn works and no Mozart at all. If I had noticed that Ligeti was so close I might have voted for him in the hope of sinking Haydn (sorry Gurn).

That is an excellent strategy that I often use.  In one particular game, I never voted for my favorite work because of all the votes it was collecting.

I feel like if anyone is at fault for giving the opportunity for Ligeti to miss the top spot it would be me when I last-minute voted for Schubert to bump him up into the 90s. Otherwise Ligeti would have been closer to the top and Baron Scarpia would have probably said something like 'looks like this is where votes are going' and pushed Ligeti up to 100 along with the two quartets that were ahead of Ligeti.

Honestly, I love Schubert's string quartets and I was happy to support one of them even just a little. I did that also because I thought a closer game would have been a more exciting game no matter who the outcome. Because of that, ther was no clear top 3 or top 4 as they were often neck and neck, overtaking each other by only a few points.

We are getting hung up on voter motivation; that's a bad thing for my games.

Voter motivation is nobody's business except for the person casting his/her particular votes!!!!

I only concern myself with my own motivation.  I don't care what yours might be; I just want you to cast votes however you like as long as you adhere to the voting rules.

While we are on the subject of motivation, these are usually my reasons for voting as I do:

1.  I vote for my favored entries (especially in the early stages of a game).

2.  When it becomes clear to me that a favored entry will not receive sufficient votes, I move on to the next best entry which has some legs.

3.  My main goal is to maximize my influence on game outcomes, and that might well include a strategy to deny an entry I don't care advancement to the final round.

4.  I like to strike at the right time.  It's a great feeling to end a game by voting my favorite entry into the winner's position while also making sure that a not-liked entry doesn't move forward.

5.  As the game-runner, I sometimes vote purposely to tighten a game and make it more competitive/interesting.

6.  There are times when I vote for low-point entries before half-time to insure that I don't end up with an excessive number of drop-outs.  In one game, there were likely to be 6 ties toward the bottom of the board.  I waited for the right moment, put one entry into the 50 points region and gave votes to 3 losers to insure a decent number of entries continuing in the game.

My point is that we are playing a game, not merely giving votes to favorites.  Games involve strategies; otherwise, you might as well just have a poll, make your votes and move on to other subjects - one and done.  In a game, I get to vote every day and the numbers I'm looking at are never the same.

Let me get this straight. You vote for the moderns as a policy not as a matter of your musical judgment. Then you complain others (you imagine) are voting for older composers as a policy.
Who's complaining? I'm talking about strategy. It is a game, you know...

Man, you guys are a tough crowd ::) Over at TalkClassical there's hardly any of this bickering involving the games (which is why I spend most of my time there nowadays)...
