In the dustbin, where it belongs. :)

You're wrong.

Pettersson's big 2nd should be there too, definitely in Top10 for me and others.
Some notable absentees include Bloch, Martinu, Rosenberg, Taktakishvili, Rawsthorne, Martin, Valen, Rochberg, etc.

Not wrong --- just someone with an opinion that doesn't match your own. I agree about Martinů's VCs and the Martin and Bloch VCs are exceptionally fine works.

My favorite violin concertos of any era would probably be:

1. Sibelius
2. Barber
3. Shostakovich 1
4. Tchaikovsky
5. starts getting blurry or hard to rank after that

Vasks is another name for the "other/write-in" pile here. Before voting I'm going to relisten to the Salonen, which I remember thinking was awesome.

Tentatively (before voting), my favorite concerti from this era would include the three listed above plus Prokofiev 2, Salonen, Khachaturian, Leshnoff 2, Stravinsky, Korngold, Walton, Rautavaara, Vasks, Glass, Martinu 2, Martinu two violins, and Sebastian Fagerlund.

Looking at the list from the OP again and it's actually missing A LOT of great concerti from the 20th Century. I don't know much about 21st Century composers and I personally don't have the energy nor interest to actually delve into new music --- I'm very much a 19th and 20th listener Century through and through.

3) Shostakovich
4) Berg
5) Gubaidulina

Did Lutoslawski and Ravel write violin concertos? They wrote concertante works for the instrument, but they're not proper VCs at all.

Anyway, my list includes:

Szymanowski 2
Sibelius
Shostakovich 1
Stravinsky
Britten
Respighi Concerto gregoriano
Bartók 2
Castelnuovo-Tedesco 2
Khachaturian
Tubin 1
Pettersson 2
Penderecki 1
Peterson-Berger

I wondered about their inclusion as well. These works for violin and orchestra from Lutoslawski and Ravel are most definitely not violin concertos. Oh and I whole-heartedly agree with you about the Respighi. What an incredible piece --- so gorgeous and uplifting.

A strong recommendation from me for Malcolm Williamson's Violin Concerto, which has a particularly poignant last movement.

I should have mentioned the very fine one by David Morgan (not included on list). CD recordings (EMI/Lyrita) exist of both concertos:

Actually I didn't expect Nielsen to do so comparatively well. Nice. My own appreciation of that concerto came quite late, partly depending on hearing several recordings.

Missing and important:

Bacewicz (I tend to prefer the earlier concertos, so I'd include No. 1)
KA Hartman: Concerto funebre
Bernstein: Serenade

A few more, of perhaps less importance in the repertoire:

Alwyn (a very beautiful concerto)
The 2 Piston concertos
Benjamin Lees
Fricker (coupled with the previously mentioned Dan Morgan concerto on a Lyrita CD).  One of Fricker's more appealing works.

I'm sure there are more that I've forgotten.

Sibelius, Berg, Elgar, Pettersson and Carter.

Bloch and Tischchenko 2 wait in the antechamber.

When I first listened to the Nielsen VC, I thought it was too "light" and lacking in substance compared to his symphonies. But, recently, my affection for music on the "lighter" side of the spectrum has increased, and now I love the work! It's so quirky and full of energy and good humor. Vilde Frang's recording is particularly fantastic.

Many years ago, when BBC Radio 3 used to have a Christmas quiz, contestants one year were asked to compose a limerick whose first line was "There was a composer named X".  David Owen Norris's contribution was:

There was a composer named Glass,
There was a composer named Glass,
There was a composer,
There was a composer,
There was a composer named Glass.

And shouldn't we have Davies and Janáček on the list?  Max definitely wrote a violin concerto and Janáček sort-of might have done.
