That is, Spanish
commissioned work by Joseph Haydn. The fine ensemble,
Cuarteto Casals, perform works written by the composer in the 1790s during which he composed two string quartets for the Duke of Alba and his Opus 51 for a brotherhood of monks from Cadiz. Here are
String Quartet in D Minor, No. 42, an unpublished
String Quartet in B Flat Major and
The Last Seven Words of Christ, respectively. They're quite a contemplative grouping, befitting a meditative Sunday evening. They're followed by a nice encore from J.S. Bach's
Art of the Fuge.
