Post any bugs here.

We've had some reports of Chrome users getting the message that GMG "doesn't support a secure connection." Has anyone else experienced this recently?

It hasn't happened to me yet but it seems to have just started this week.

I was the one who reported this to Brian. It seems to come and go (maybe a certificate that has expired)? It's ok for now.

I figured that someone would probably go there!

As an aside, is there a thread on tariffs (or is that verboten)?

I've noticed some slow load times in the past few hours and I've tested my connection while browsing other sites and there aren't any problems so it must be a GMG server problem.

Good to know that it wasn't on my end. Well, I mean it's not good that GMG's server is experiencing problems, but it's good to know that it's not us.

The restriction seems to be working as intended, it's just that the Who's Online page is misleading. I tried logging out and "viewing" my own profile. Even though I'm denied access, it still counts as a guest Viewing Selig's profile in the activity log.

I was logged in on a second device to monitor the guest's (i.e. my own) activity. But I realized it could also be done with one computer, using two different browsers (or even using one browser, with a second window in private mode AKA incognito mode).

I have for some unknown reason since yesterday been unable to access the forum via the Microsoft Edge browser (which I normally use for this). I get an error message:

Error 403 Forbidden.
You don't have permission to access this resource.

On the other hand I can access (and log on) the forum via the Google Chrome browser, so I suppose the error depends on the forum.

I found out that the forbidden message has something to do when I try to link certain pictures from other sites. If you look at the linked picture's information, there are actually two addresses there. One of the addresses has an error in link and the next address has no such message and looks normal. So the linked picture has two addresses that are somehow being brought along when you copy-and-paste the image.

I hope this is making sense, but strange is all I can really say.

Are you trying to enter the forum at the same point in both cases?

My standard entry point is the "Updated Topics" page I've mentioned. I'm getting the Forbidden message on my desktop using Firefox, but can then type in some other page (not necessarily the home page), and from there I can go to Updated Topics and everything is fine. The misbehaviour is only on the first attempt.

Whereas I don't think I've yet had any problems using my iPhone and Safari.

I'm afraid the mixture of the server being there and the steam might electrocute fellow spa goers. Perhaps we can get the server its own private session. ;D

I think you mean between the two clients (browsers). I couldn't say specifically, but generally speaking the serving of a web page involves two way exchange of data. You type in a URL, the server sends the top level page, which contains references to secondary elements, images, controls, scripts, etc. The browser then requests these secondary elements. If the server is not performing well the browser could submit a secondary request based on a garbled or incompletely downloaded page which would result in an error. One browser may be more robust rhan another in recognizing bad data.

No, no, no!  That wasn't what I was thinking of [which also would kill the server too] more like: yoga, stretching, meditation, er...specialized facial(?), healthy diet, a good-night's sleep, etc.

I'm still getting it consistently if I try on Firefox to go to the Updated Topics page directly. Which is tremendously weird. Because I can go there from any other page within the forum and everything is fine.

Somehow, the process of saying that it's me and my account trying to access the page has broken down. That's all I can think of. It doesn't know it's a forum member asking for the Updated Topics page so it says no. Once it knows it's me signed into the forum, it's happy.

The situation lasted about two hours and resolved spontaneously. Probably an error at my broadband provider. But strangely enough my computer told me that the internet connection was OK.

Edit: Just now I see that my broadband provider has had technical problems. But when the problems were there, they announced on their website that the operational status was without problems.

FP,

When I look at your postings, I'm seeing a weird symbol at the end.  It's a bit hard to read.  It's a combo of letters and numbers inside of a square (outline).  Looks like O1F over RE4?

O.k., so it's a reference to a page and a quote from the Dead Sea Scrolls?  ;)

Even the index page seems to be giving me that "Forbidden" message. I think it has something to do with there being a "session ID" attached to it, so it gets upset that the timing information doesn't match? Or something.

It just means I can't bookmark for quick access and have to spend a few seconds typing. But it's still weird that this has become a thing when it was never a thing before. *shrug*

For some reason the server does not accept the latter. The solution is changing the file's extension from jpeg to jpg.

There are other file formats the server does not take, and require converting the file to jpg format.

I've tried this and to no avail, but thanks anyway! Also, I don't think it has anything to do with the image's file extension as I've uploaded jpg and jpeg files before and had no errors.

I've never had this issue before and it doesn't matter the size of the image, because it's automatically resized by the forum's software. Also, if you look around, you will see many other members who have avatars that are different shapes and sizes.

Yes, I've tried it with an image where I resized it to be less than 240x240. I've tried PNG, JPG, and JPEG. Nothing. All generate the error. I think you're right, there is a problem with the forum software.

The avatar problem might be the "colour mode." Maybe black and white pictures are not allowed? If so, the solution would be forcing the colour mode into RGB even if there is only gray shades in the picture.

I set the color profile to sRGB IEC61966-2.1

I suspect there are other users' profiles being affected as well, but the pattern is pretty clear: whether or not I can see a page, or how much of a page I can see, is being determined by which users are posting on it. There is zero problem when there's a post from certain people (for example, everyone on page 1 of this thread is fine), but as soon as there's a post from an affected user, it comes to a crashing halt.

I have no idea WHY this should be the case. I'm not for a moment suggesting that @71 dB or anyone else has done anything obviously wrong. I'm just saying that the forum has developed a dislike for a specific user or users.

The forum software was recently updated to version 2.1.6

Apparently a bug crept into the code, and all forums using SMF have been affected. The software developers have issued a workaround. I have put this in place, and things should function as normal for now.

I expect version 2.1.7 will be released soon to address this issue permanently.

Let me know if there are any further issues.

Well, if you see my 2nd post, yours was just the first profile I could identify. I've actually worked out a few of the others that were making it crash as well. Karl was one, and given how much he posts the whole forum was in trouble.  ;D

It was very peculiar behaviour, I've no clue why the forum was objecting to specific people. Sometimes it was possible to see an entire page, sometimes half a page, sometimes one post and sometimes nothing. And I think it was entirely based on who had posted.

Updates should FIX problems, not CREATE new ones. Releasing software updates is too easy. Software developers don't care how much unnecessary hassle these bug-infected updates cause.

Yes, did something similar, and it's back!

Quite right, though it does happen rather often. That's why you'll sometimes see quick fixes rolled out shortly after an update. I've run into this more than a few times myself. Some folks, for instance, hold off on installing new OS versions, preferring to wait a few weeks or even months until the dust settles and things are tidied up properly.

As for what happened to the forum today, there's a brief summary in post #136 of this thread.

Quote from: Dungeon Master on July 13, 2025, 02:33:38 AMThe forum software was recently updated to version 2.1.6

Apparently a bug crept into the code, and all forums using SMF have been affected. The software developers have issued a workaround. I have put this in place, and things should function as normal for now.

I expect version 2.1.7 will be released soon to address this issue permanently.

Let me know if there are any further issues.

I get this message when trying to post my review

You don't have permission to access this resource.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
That a lot of bull

When I try to post in the 'What are you listening 2 now?' thread, a message appears:

"You don't have permission to access this resource.

Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

Tried other thread, all is fine.

Very strange. In the end, I managed to post an image in the thread WAYL2N, but when I tried to add a few lines of text to the image, I kept getting an error again. Nevertheless, a short text of a few words did go through.

Yep had this message before, some weeks ago, afterwards not anymore.

The funny thing is, when I tried to add a 5- or 6-line caption to the image, I kept getting an error. BUT when I was adding a different text of similar length in the same post, there was no error. So obviously the problem was in the text itself, but apart from Frescobaldi's name repeated twice, there was nothing suspicious at all... :o

Its like Que said a old bug ressurected. It will go away again. Another bug from old which has also ressurected are the emails, coming far after I have posted my reviews.
Very annoying

There's a strange problem over in the David Hurwitz thread.  I tried clicking on the newest post:  nothing showed up there and also there are doubles of the reply header and the mark read.

This happened to me yesterday and continues today. Tried a few different browsers with the same results.

This has been happening to me a lot recently. I typed a long post with several quotes (in the Birders Nest section), and when I tried to submit it, I got the 'FORBIDDEN!' treatment and the post was refused. I discovered that if I broke down the post into little morsels, they would go through with no problem, but I could find no pattern to what was happening.

I've switched from Firefox to Edge, and haven't experienced the problem again, but then I've only tried a few short posts so far.

I still get "Forbidden" at the start of a session. But never after that. So it's a very minor inconvenience where I basically retype that I want the index page.

Google tells me there's probably  something up with the "htaccess" file. Apparently it's quite a common error with php but it would still be nice to get rid of it.
