We've had some reports of Chrome users getting the message that GMG "doesn't support a secure connection." Has anyone else experienced this recently?

Streng verbotten.
I've noticed some slow load times in the past few hours and I've tested my connection while browsing other sites and there aren't any problems so it must be a GMG server problem.
Also issues this morning... in connecting, opening a reply form, posting, etc..
The sever connection seems definitely to be faltering....
I saw some peat turn to coal waiting for the page to load. :o
I just received this message (after clicking on the updated button): "The server is currently under high stress. Please try again shortly. "

Good to know that it wasn't on my end. Well, I mean it's not good that GMG's server is experiencing problems, but it's good to know that it's not us.
Will it also have to do with the number of users online (and bots)? Today 3733.

The restriction seems to be working as intended, it's just that the

I was logged in on a second device to monitor the guest's (i.e. my own) activity. But I realized it could also be done with one computer, using two different browsers (or even using one browser, with a second window in private mode AKA incognito mode).

I found out that the forbidden message has something to do when I try to link certain pictures from other sites. If you look at the linked picture's information, there are actually two addresses there. One of the addresses has an error in link and the next address has no such message and looks normal. So the linked picture has two addresses that are somehow being brought along when you copy-and-paste the image.
I hope this is making sense, but strange is all I can really say.
I got the "Temporally unavailable--high stress" message a few minutes ago.
I have now got the "forbidden" message every time I during the last two days have tried to access the forum, but only when I use Microsoft Edge. My standard entry point is the "Updated Topics" page I've mentioned. I think you mean between the two clients (browsers). I couldn't say specifically, but generally speaking the serving of a web page involves two way exchange of data. You type in a URL, the server sends the top level page, which contains references to secondary elements, images, controls, scripts, etc. The browser then requests these secondary elements. If the server is not performing well the browser could submit a secondary request based on a garbled or incompletely downloaded page which would result in an error. One browser may be more robust rhan another in recognizing bad data.

I'm still getting it consistently if I try on Firefox to go to the Updated Topics page directly. Which is tremendously weird. Because I can go there from any other page within the forum and everything is fine.
Somehow, the process of saying that it's me and my account trying to access the page has broken down. That's all I can think of. It doesn't know it's a forum member asking for the Updated Topics page so it says no. Once it knows it's me signed into the forum, it's happy.

I've never had this issue before and it doesn't matter the size of the image, because it's automatically resized by the forum's software. Also, if you look around, you will see many other members who have avatars that are different shapes and sizes.

every image before ;) .

My avatar is black-white. No problems.
My avatar is pure nothingness, flawless :)
@71 dB the photo being in black and white doesn't have anything to do with it as I've used this Feldman photo before with zero problems.
I wish
@Dungeon Master could fix the problem and I'm not the only one with this issue.
Just tried to be helpful. Sorry I wasn't able to be...

Well an old problem re-appeared quite suddenly; Emails arriving long after I have read the post, very annoying, and apart from that other things go wrong as well, I hope the Dungeon master has not given up regarding GMG, that would be terrible!

Same here.

Somebody better define function idna_maps_not_std3() or we need to stop calling it. :D

It's a problem that seems to be affecting all members. We have already contacted Rob to see what can be done.
Best,

Same thing here...very annoying, this problem seems to get worse by the day!
I cannot read the last parts of this thread, or certain pages of it.
But I have a weird suspicion the problem has something to do with 71dB's profile.
He is the first person I can't read on this thread. I also can't read his profile page whereas so far I can read others.

Indeed the site is becoming hard to use.

Same here as well, in all threads. The forum has a big problem.
I suspect there are other users' profiles being affected as well, but the pattern is pretty clear: whether or not I can see a page, or how much of a page I can see, is being determined by which users are posting on it. There is zero problem when there's a post from certain people (for example, everyone on page 1 of this thread is fine), but as soon as there's a post from an affected user, it comes to a crashing halt.
I have no idea WHY this should be the case. I'm not for a moment suggesting that
@71 dB or anyone else has done anything obviously wrong. I'm just saying that the forum has developed a dislike for a specific user or users.
The forum software was recently updated to version 2.1.6
Apparently a bug crept into the code, and all forums using SMF have been affected. The software developers have issued a workaround. I have put this in place, and things should function as normal for now.
I expect version 2.1.7 will be released soon to address this issue permanently.
Let me know if there are any further issues.
Rob
Can immediately confirm improvement!

Works for me.

I see the reply button. Maybe it helped that I went to Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, deleted the GMG website from the list, and logged in again (Safari)

I am clearly a troublemaker! For a while I could not post anything. If you can see this post, the workaround by Dungeon Master is working. 8)

The issue was clearly caused by a server software update.

Well, if you see my 2nd post, yours was just the first profile I could identify. I've actually worked out a few of the others that were making it crash as well. Karl was one, and given how much he posts the whole forum was in trouble. ;D
It was very peculiar behaviour, I've no clue why the forum was objecting to specific people. Sometimes it was possible to see an entire page, sometimes half a page, sometimes one post and sometimes nothing. And I think it was entirely based on
who had posted.

Updates should FIX problems, not CREATE new ones. Releasing software updates is too easy. Software developers don't care how much unnecessary hassle these bug-infected updates cause.

Yes, did something similar, and it's back!

Quite right, though it does happen rather often. That's why you'll sometimes see quick fixes rolled out shortly after an update. I've run into this more than a few times myself. Some folks, for instance, hold off on installing new OS versions, preferring to wait a few weeks or even months until the dust settles and things are tidied up properly.
As for what happened to the forum today, there's a brief summary in post #136 of this thread.

Thank you for the fix,

I get this message when trying to post my review

When I try to post in the 'What are you listening 2 now?' thread, a message appears:
"You don't have permission to access this resource.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."
Tried other thread, all is fine.
Very strange. In the end, I managed to post an image in the thread WAYL2N, but when I tried to add a few lines of text to the image, I kept getting an error again. Nevertheless, a short text of a few words did go through.
Sounds like similar to the old bug...But had no issue just now.

The funny thing is, when I tried to add a 5- or 6-line caption to the image, I kept getting an error. BUT when I was adding a different text of similar length in the same post, there was no error. So obviously the problem was in the text itself, but apart from Frescobaldi's name repeated twice, there was nothing suspicious at all... :o

Its like Que said a old bug ressurected. It will go away again. Another bug from old which has also ressurected are the emails, coming far after I have posted my reviews.
Very annoying
There's a strange problem over in the David Hurwitz thread. I tried clicking on the newest post: nothing showed up there and also there are doubles of the reply header and the mark read.

This happened to me yesterday and continues today. Tried a few different browsers with the same results.

This has been happening to me a lot recently. I typed a long post with several quotes (in the Birders Nest section), and when I tried to submit it, I got the 'FORBIDDEN!' treatment and the post was refused. I discovered that if I broke down the post into little morsels, they would go through with no problem, but I could find no pattern to what was happening.
I've switched from Firefox to Edge, and haven't experienced the problem again, but then I've only tried a few short posts so far.
I still get "Forbidden" at the start of a session. But never after that. So it's a very minor inconvenience where I basically retype that I want the index page.
Google tells me there's probably something up with the "htaccess" file. Apparently it's quite a common error with php but it would still be nice to get rid of it.
