Title: Recommendations for Classical Music Compilation?
Post by: Solitary Wanderer on October 05, 2007, 12:07:32 PM
I'm looking for a decent 1 or 2 disc classical music cd compilation to give as a gift.

Theres dozens available, but I was wondering if anyones discovered a good one that they'd recommend.

Theres a great 6 disc set called 100:Classic Best, but a 6 disc set would be too much for a beginner.

Thanks :)

I know you asked for a 1 or 2 disc set, but this set is really good and really inexpensive.  10 CDs for under $25.  I always recommend it to students.

DG's series of 2CD set's like this one:

are excellent.

Just type in to Amazon, 'Classical Top 100'.

I picked up a set of 6 CDs some years ago which served as an excellent introduction to a raft of works by dozens of composers.

Yeah, I'd already done the Amazon search and come up with a number of options which were mainly edited 'highlights' from various pieces. I thought there might be a decent 2cd set out there for a beginner which I'm not aware of. I may have to rethink what exactly it is I'm looking for; that Best Classics 100 6cd set is quite good, but its still 'highlights' which I find a bit insulting, but then for a newbie it may be just the ticket.  :)

The sets I referred to are of complete works.  :)

Yes, that is a great series George. In fact I have the two Wagner ones from the set.

I was looking for a comp for my step-daughter, so its a little tricky to find the best option. I don't want it too dumb or two long-winded.

Maybe I'll make up my own comp then it'll be perfect  ;)
