I just heard a very surprising Vivaldi recording by Nigel Kennedy and members of the Berlin Philharmonic. When the radio host announced it I thought "Yeah, right," rolling my eyes. But then they started playing! Wow! Hammerstroked eighth notes in the first movement, improvisations all over, and as light and clear a string tone as I've ever heard from the Berliners--HIP all the way. :D
