Title: HIP comes to Berlin
Post by: jochanaan on October 28, 2007, 07:11:12 PM
I just heard a very surprising Vivaldi recording by Nigel Kennedy and members of the Berlin Philharmonic.  When the radio host announced it I thought "Yeah, right," rolling my eyes.  But then they started playing!  Wow!  Hammerstroked eighth notes in the first movement, improvisations all over, and as light and clear a string tone as I've ever heard from the Berliners--HIP all the way. :D

Here's the data:

Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto for 2 Violins and Cello in g RV 578
Berlin Philharmonic
Nigel Kennedy, violin
Daniel Stabrawa, violin
Olaf Maninger, cello
EMI 57859
