Title: Nutcracker Question: Clara or Marie?
Post by: Bogey on December 22, 2007, 07:42:53 AM
Having a family debate at home.  So, what is the corrct name for the role of the girl that goes to the Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy and wakes up under the Cristmas tree at the end?  Clara or Marie?  I have read a few things on the web and some seem to either contradict one another or are unclear.  My daughter says Marie, while my wife insists on Clara.

I'm pretty sure it was Clara ~ or at least it was at the Houston Ballet production I saw a couple weeks ago...

Same in the production we saw last night Brian.

I did dig this up from the web though:

Certainly the loveliest is "The Nutcracker" by Susan Jeffers, who has a long list of beautifully illustrated books to her name. The cover, with its golden letters and sparkles in Marie's ringlets and the nutcracker's epaulets, will entrance youngsters. (Yes, it's Marie, not Clara, as in Hoffman's tale. In the original, Clara is a doll.)

Russian version is Masha, according to the DVD from the Mariinsky which my daughter adores.....so do I, to tell the truth.
