Title: Unable to Play HybridSACD in DVD player
Post by: Opus106 on January 13, 2008, 07:15:10 AM
Well, I just bought the Kleiber/Beethoven 5,7 Hybrid SACD. I inserted it into the DVD player, which is what I usually use to play (the ordinary) CDs, but it doesn't recognise the disc at all. (I see a 'no disc' in the display) Sometimes the 'mp3' in the display panel glows, but the disc won't play. I'm able to play it on my computer and smaller casette+CD player.

Do you have any suggestions to offer on how to play it using the DVD player?  ??? :'(

Thanks.

This happens sometimes, if you want the SACD side to play, you are going to need a SACD Player. IF you just want to play the CD side, than most conventional Cd players will do. Sometimes, the DVD players won't read the CD side as well. I guess you can only listen to that on a CD player, or on the computer.

The wavelength of the laser used to read the data may be the issue.  CD's are supposed to be read with an infrared laser, DVD, HDDVD, Blue-Ray, SACD, are all designed to be read by different wavelengths of visible light.  It may be that you DVD player is "stretching" the rules and reading CD's with an inappropriate color which suits ordinary CDs but not SACD hybrid.  Does your DVD player read CD-r?  if so, you can burn a copy of the CD layer of your SACD on CD-r and use that in your DVD player.

Thanks for the reply, Gustav. Changing the options in the player's setup doesn't seem to help, but at least I can connect the cd player to bigger speakers. From what I've heard(of the first movement), this CD doesn't deserve to be listened through tiny computer speakers. :D

Does your DVD player read CD-r?
It plays the other CDs in my collection properly, but I haven't actually tried it with a burnt CD.

How does one do that? Is the facility available with Nero or similar software?

Thanks. :)

it's just like ripping from a normal CD. So, be it windows media, nero, or whatever....

If you want to rip the SACD layer, good luck! I don't think that is possible at this stage.

It's also not necessary at this stage.  :)  ;)

A couple of days after creating this thread, I tried another time. Lo and behold, the CD started playing!
Finally, I got to hear the music that has an average of 4.5 stars from over a hundred reviews at amazon. :D Wonderful music...but something I noticed for the first time: A "jump" between movements 3 and 4. Although each movement has a separate track in almost every CD, I've never heard the jump in Beethoven's 5th while listening to the radio. Maybe I should just reduce the volume at the "transition point" and make the change in tracks unnoticeable.
