Title: RCA VICTOR BASIC 100 cd series
Post by: dave b on January 18, 2008, 07:12:39 AM
I just asked this question under General Discussion but brought it over here to see if anyone knows about any other series of cds which cover the classical music spectrum, not only for beginners but for everyone. I know the RCA series is now unavailable, and that the individual pieces are reissued. So there is no more RCA victor series. But if anyone knows of any other series which has the top 50 composers and their works, or something similar, please let me know. I am not a beginner but I sure am not an advanced student of classical music. A series like this would help me rather than shopping around for what at this point would be unknown. There must be some good compilation of all the greats into one cd series. Thanks in advance

Yes, that is exactly what I mean, similar to this www.wfcc.com/wfcc_essential.htm  but in a set that can be purchased as a set. But that site you just gave me is great because it does give the recording instead of just the composer and piece. So thank you for that. But is there anything like that that anyone knows of, where it is available to purchase as a set? I am not THAT lazy, :) ; I can compile it myself, but if there is one particular set that has most or all of that in it already, that is what I am looking for too........

In case there are others, whether beginner or not, who are looking for lists like this and complete sets for sale, I have a good book here called The Essential Classical Recordings: 101 CDs, by Rick Phillips, ISBN 0-7710-7001-2

Okay okay I got you. There is this (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Symphonies-Symphonies-Symphonic-Cycles/dp/B000WM9ZPM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1200675089&sr=1-2) which you get 100 cds and has pretty much all the symphonies covered, if you are not that particular about the recordings. But if you are not a total beginner you may wonder can I get a better recording that that big box then you may have to look at separate recordings.

Also SONY ESSENTIAL CLASSICS series has a lot of recordings still in print each costing about $6 featuring the likes of Szell and Ormandy. But they don't have it as a big set, you have to purchase them separately.

I am absolutely amazed that it only took 11 posts for me to go from the dreaded "newbie" to a full member. I was wondering when that was going to happen, and was just about to post just about anything to escape the newbie status.

Actually most of the performances in that big box are licensed from major labels and are actually very good. So basically you have 100cds for a bit over $100. Once you find the music you like you can always look for other recordings. I wished they had something like that when I first started collecting cds.

I wouldn't go there, if I were in your place!  :o  Buying "BIG" box sets and whole series, I mean. :)

Better check posted resources for beginners HERE (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,767.0.html). And go slowly... 8)

Thanks. I would have hesitated at the one big box series which has only symphonies.....the Sony Essential Classics sounds good, though. But those resources you just gave me----I will take a closer look. Thank you.
