Title: 1957 Covent Garden Ring on Testament
Post by: rw1883 on March 16, 2008, 05:08:45 PM
This looks very good and the price is about $100 including shipping from Crotchet (info from MDT):

Walhall is releasing it at the same time for about half the price, but I'm going with Testament...I've been wanting to buy the 1960 Kempe from Bayreuth, so this works better financially.  Any thoughts or comments on this 1957 cycle?

Crud. I'll have to buy this one too, and the stereo Klemperer Holländer with James King as Erik.

I believe that this was one of a number of cycles conducted by Kempe at the ROH in the fifties and sixties.

He was very popular at the opera house.

At $100 including post seems a bargain and the recent issues from Covent Garden of fifties performances, including one conducted by Kempe, suggests good sound.

I have the only part of the Ring that Kempe recorded commercially. This was for EMI, the opening and closing of Rheingold plus a couple of other stretches of that piece. It filled most of an LP. It is exceptionally lyrical and warm.

Based on that I would like to get hold of a complete cycle.
