Title: David Lang (b. 1957)
Post by: bhodges on April 08, 2008, 06:55:51 AM
Last fall I heard David Lang's The Little Match Girl Passion (2007) at Carnegie Hall, and liked it a lot, so I was happy to find out the piece won this year's Pulitzer Prize.  And Carnegie Hall is streaming it on its website, so anyone who wants to give it a listen can do so here (http://www.carnegiehall.org/article/sound_insights/works/commissions/art_detail_TheLittleMatchGirlPassion_commissions.html).

Other pieces of his I've enjoyed in recent years:

The So-Called Laws of Nature (2002)
I Lie (2001)
Little Eye (1999)
The Passing Measures (1998)
Cheating, Lying, Stealing (1996) - Its percussion includes two "antiphonal brakedrums."  :D

Here (http://www.schirmer.com/Default.aspx?TabId=2419&State_2872=3&ComposerID_2872=882&CategoryID_2872=0) is a list of his works on Schirmer's site.

And here (http://www.pulitzer.org/year/2008/music/works/) is the Pulitzer site with a sample page from the score (admittedly small) and some notes.

Just commented on it in another thread.  :)

BTW, Lang was nominated for an Oscar this year with Simple Song #3 from the film Youth. And sung by Sumi Jo.
Soak yourself in this beauty...

I remember being particularly impressed by the works on the Naxos "Pierced" cd. Must give that another play later today:

edit: and in finding that image I learn for the first time that Anonymous 4 have done a disc of his music:
