Title: Thanks Xantus' Murrelet!
Post by: Subotnick on May 01, 2008, 03:24:02 AM
Hello.

I was browsing over at last.fm and came across a link to here in Xantus' Murrelet's profile. I have recently rediscovered my love for classical music and was wondering if a place like this existed, should I need further help in exploring my passion.

Welcome, Subotnick! I am certain you'll find enough here to keep you sustained and entertained for many many months. Could you tell us something about your musical preferences?

Ok - but where to start!  :-\

I love Brahms and Sibelius. Cannot get enough of them at the moment. I'm also fond of Kalinnikov, Liadov, Cui and Kabeláč to name but a few. I'm interseted in exploring more of their work (I only know a few pieces by each) and composers similar to them.

I've always been scared of modern/avantegarde/minimalist music. But thanks to last.fm I've found there's nothing to be scared of at all!  ;D My favourites so far in that category are Morton Subotnick, Ragnar Grippe, Robert Ashley and John Adams.

There you go. But that's just the tip of the iceberg...

Thanks!

Well, I know you'll find people here who share your enthusiasm for the composers you mention. Just explore, look and post around (the 'What are you listening to'-thread is very inforrmative if you want to know what posters here like or dislike).

Subotnick - a warm welcome to the GMG Forum - you will find plenty of information & interesting people w/ all sorts of likes (and dislikes -  ;D)!

You might want to start w/ some 'searching' on your favorite composers - might bring up some posts or even threads; as already mentioned, there is a 'listening thread' - good place to see what others are playing & a place for you to post your own listenings for comments, recommendations, etc.  There are also threads on buying & considering that contain a lot of interesting topics - finally just look around for a while and you'll quickly get the 'hang' of the place -  :)

Hi Subotnick, and welcome.  I'm a fan of Morton Subotnick, too, ever since hearing The Silver Apples of the Moon years ago.  One of my first CD purchases was The Key to Songs, which I still play now and then.

Hail, O Subotnick! Your namesake has certainly made some wonderful music over the years -- the first thing I ever heard by him was the classic Silver Apples of the Moon, but that isn't the best thing he ever did by a long shot.

The Key To Songs was my introduction to Morton. It's great, but Jacob's Room has surpassed it in my esteem.
