In a few weeks this will be internationally released on the label Brilliant, exciting enough I think.
The Magnard I bought last year for full price, so I am really pissed, the Martinu done by Jarvi I had for a long time, and is worth the modest investment. Both BIS recordings.
The Reger is a Chandos recording, absolutely worth you while.
Alban Berg, Complete Chamber Music, Schoenberg Ensemble.
Magnard, 2 cd's 14,- euro's.
Martinu 3 cd's 14,- euro's
Reger 2 cd's 9 euro's.
Berg, 1 cd 6,- euro.
Enjoy!
And these two :)
Looks like a nice opportunity to hear some Reger for the first time :D

Well you are lucky, this box is cheaper as a full priced BIS.
And the price could be even lower as I quoted.
Two releases this time, will be on the market in a short time.
First Handel, complete Harpsichord Works, played by Michael Borgstede, on 4 cd's. #18,- euro's, could be less.
New recordings.
The second issue speaks for it self I think. 2 cd's 9,- euro's, could also be less. Decca recordings.
Huh, no one interested in Handel's harpsichord music, it isn't Borgstede what, damn fine player he is, and from what I heard, its as good as his Couperin, yes Sir! ;D
Some new upcoming releases from Brilliant
Telemann, Volume III in their ongoing series to record all orchestral works.
And Carrisimi oratorias, recording with McCreesh
Brilliant was generous today :)
Telemann's recorder music.
And the first in a complete recording of all of Soler's Harpsichord music played by Pieter Jan Belder.
I am very curious after this one, very! The Naxos recordings I have are already superb.
And for all that expected the 7th volume, well I know at least me and Sonicman (Dave) did, the Haydn finally arrived.

I happened to see this at amazon.de last night (€12.99). I wasn't pissed. I've had the full-price CDs for several years...I feel I've gotten my money's worth. Look at it philosophically: someone has to pay the original price in order to keep new recordings coming.
But the main reason I'm posting is to once again urge people to hear Magnard's music. This is, overall, I think, the best cycle. Now you can hear it cheap.

Gurn & Harry - well, that's going to be a BIG box! :D BTW, I added this group in the Op. 1 & 2 works recently (which are more like pre-SQs, I guess, esp. w/ Haydn's description of these works) - so, now own ALL of the Haydn SQs w/ some duplications, but done by a wide variety of performers - does one really need ONE group doin' them all? ;) ;D Dave

No, that's very good, but I mean "THE BIG BOX", which is to say, the Complete Works of Haydn. Of course, they will have to go far to surpass my Haydn collection now, but I would take the plunge even if only for the 20% or so that I don't have. I want it, and I want it now! :D

If you love Magnard, the differences in interpretation warrant duplication. At least the Ossonce disc with 3 and 4 should be heard. I can understand why some would prefer Ossonce to Sanderling. In general, he is swifter, more elegant....more French. Of course that begs the question: are these French symphonies or really German symphonies written by a Frenchman? Sanderling gives us the latter and I think he's right.

Harry - just have the Buchberger SQ in the earlier works (Op. 1 & 2 as mentioned; and Op. 9, shown below); but recently I purchased the Op. 9 works w/ a new group, the
London Haydn Quartet on a great Hyperion bargain - based on a fabulous review in
Fanfare; also, a bunch of short but exellent comments on the Hyperion Website (http://www.hyperion-records.co.uk/details/67611.asp) - after several comparison listenings, I like both groups as well! But, hey, it may be Haydn's fault! - I can easily recommend either recordings (or both!) - Dave

I also own Borgstede´s Couperin box, and agree that he is a good musician, and he can easily satisfy my need for F.Couperin´s harpsichord music, as I do not want to spend a small fortune on Spieth.
On the other hand Belder has emerged as an inspired and all-round musician (recording Bach, Scarlatti, Purcell, Corelli) , and I am sure, that his abilities might have been used better. E.g we still need a convincing integral recording of Frescobaldis keyboard music. Vartolo is serviceable (on Tactus and Naxos) , but often too letargic and meditative.
Exciting news! Thanks Harry :)
I have the Bryden Thomson Martinu set, so may not get the new one and I have the EMI Plasson Magnard set, but it's difficult to resist these temptations. I strongly recommend the Brilliant, Alexander Gauk box (newish release) which is full of interesting stuff. Shostakovich Symphony 11 and 5, Miaskovsky Symphony 17 (great performance, Gauk was the dedicatee), Khachaturian Symphony 1 etc etc.

The complete Magnard and Martinu on Brilliant are just 8,- euro's, a piece, a no brainer really!
Cesar Franck this time.
2 cd's, 7,00 euro's.
What a great idea for a thread! Brilliant is a terrific label.
And a few more, to begin with, Saint Saens, Romances sans Paroles for Oboe and Piano. performed by Bart Schneemann on Oboe, and Paolo Giacometti on Piano, 1 cd, 5,- euro's.
Philippe Gaubert, Complete Flute Works. Played by Susan Milan on Flute, and Ian Brown on Piano. 2 cd's 7,- euro's.
One that speaks for itself, and this interesting box with 4 cd's for just 13,- euro's, and that is a steal, for the quality performances you get. Sung by Elly Ameling, and Gerard Souzay, and accompanied by Dalton Baldwin.

MARIA YUDINA, Russian Archives Cat.No.: 8909
EAN Code: 5029365890922
Format: 8 CD
Label: Brilliant Classics
Composer: Various
Performed by:
Maria Yudina
Additional information:
Maria Yudina was born in 1899 and died in 1970. She studied with Frida Teitelbaum-Levinson, a pupil of Anton Rubinstein, and with Anna Esipova, a pupil of the great keyboard lion Theodor Leschetizky. Her studies included composition, conducting, organ, philosophy, languages and literature – augmenting all of this with extra studies with Felix Blumenthal, teacher of Vladimir Horowitz. She herself spent most of her life teaching.
She was a persistent thorn in Stalin's side – she is quoted as saying to him that she 'would pray for his salvation'. Banned from performing for five years for reciting Pasternak in place of giving encores, during the 1930s, she was forced to sleep rough in Moscow. She did, however, manage to escape the Gulags, and during the 1948 purges defended Shostakovich. For some reason Stalin turned a blind eye on her.
Following the death of Stalin, she was permitted to tour 'safe' countries in the Eastern Bloc – often with Shostakovich. As a result of all this she remains an elusive figure in the history of pianists, absent altogether from Harold Schonberg's respected 'The Great Pianists' of 1963.
This 7CD set is a unique opportunity to experience a great artist who suffered deprivation, and political and artistic repression. A fearless character and tenacious spirit can be heard in these recordings. Her repertoire ranged from her beloved Bach, to Bartok, Hindemith and Xenakis via the classical and Russian schools.
Further information
• Composers featured: Bach, Beethoven, Haydn, Mozart, Mussorgsky, Liszt, Brahms, Schubert, Taneyev, Prokofiev, Debussy, Stravinsky, Lutoslawski, Szymanowski, Hindemith, Honegger, Shaporin, Martinu, Jolivet
• Extensive booklet essay by Ates Orga
• A fascinating discovery and of interest to all scholars and enthusiasts of the piano
• Recordings date from the 1940s, 50s and 60s
• Few of her recordings remain available, so this release fills an important gap in the catalogue, and provides a fascinating insight of the life of an artist during the darkest years of the Soviet Union

As far as I know Dave, these Baryton Trios are very well recorded on authentic instruments, but since it is the only existing recording, its the one to go for I guess, if you want them.
Some info.
The group has, for several years now, specialized on the music for Barytone and Viola da gamba at the court of Esterházy - and its aim is, to make this little known facet of classical chamber music more acquainted to a broader public.
Concerts at festivals (also the "original places" at Esterháza Castle in Hungary and Eisenstadt, Austria), Radio - and TV - productions and CDs with CPO/SWR and Cavalli Records show the acceptance of these efforts.
The musicians of the group have all a lot of experience with diverse period instrumental formations throughout Europe.
The fruit of the ensembles monumental work, the Complete Haydn Barytone Pieces soon will be available. The collection of 21 CDs contains all those barytone pieces from Joseph Haydns life-work, that remained during the centuries.
It is not widely known, but Haydn wrote more pieces for barytone-viola-violoncello chamber trios, than string-quartets or symphonies.
The barytone trio was a kind of home-music in the palace, as the prince could play on this instrument.
The complete edition contains the 120 remained trios, a quintet, 7 octets, so all valuable notes that appeared in the academically compiled sheet music edition, including one-row long pieces too. Some pieces needed reconstruction, this work was made by Michael Brüssing and András Bolyki. Sometimes the score offered in a few cases: it required the opportunity of playing cadences, so the ensemble could not neglect this. Although these cadences were not written by Haydn, it was obvious to enroll them. A few of them were improvised during the recordings, the others were composed by the performers.
In the popular octets and in the quintet participates the Piccolo Concerto Chamber Orchestra (Vienna).

As far as I know Dave, these Baryton Trios are very well recorded on authentic instruments, but since it is the only existing recording, its the one to go for I guess, if you want them.
Thanks,
Harry, for all of the information and the link - nice seeing the
baryton being playing - the top of the instrument w/ all of those string keys is as big as the performer's head! :D

Brilliant Classics used to have a few sets on early music, i.e. pre-baroque, Renaissance but I do not seem to be able to find them on Amazon lately. Are they all OOP?
There's literally tons of Brilliant rereleases of Universal opera sets. Check the mdt.co.uk March prerelease lists.

You must remember one thing with Brilliant. they produce one big swoop of all their releases, and when its sold out its sold out.
Unless you find it somewhere second hand, you can be sure if you don't find it, its sold out.
Rarely do they release a second time.

SCHOENBERG
Moses Und Aron
Günter Reich, Louis Devos
Chor und Sinfonieorchester des Österreichischen Rundfunks / Michael Gielen
Schoenberg started composing Moses und Aron (Aaron has an 'a' missing owing to the composer's superstition about the number 13) in 1928, working on the libretto and score up to 1933. Fleeing Vienna to escape the Nazi persecution of the Jewish population, Schoenberg settled in the US where he continued working throughout the 1940s to complete Act 3. Moses und Aron was premiered in 1954. Struggling with the original biblical story and wrestling with its contradictions, Schoenberg was concerned that the audience would not grasp the extended diatribe by Moses of his brother's love for craven images. In fact, his challenge was also that of Moses' – how to translate a lofty, intellectual and abstract message without diluting or destroying it. In style, the work is severe, and nearer to oratorio than opera. However, in its dramatic and bloodthirsty moments it matches anything in Puccini's Turandot. A 12-tone Turandot, crossed with the fugal style found in the oratorios of Bach or Handel best describes this gritty, imposing, daunting 20th-century masterpiece.
'The CD transfer of Gielen's account certainly underlines the raw intensity in his approach to which Boulez would never aspire.' Gramophone

Oh, okay, it's a new site. And, hey, they have a box set of Haydn's quartets coming up! If it turns out cheaper out than Naxos, it goes on my wish-list.
Still a few tweaks needed here and there, for the website; the Haydn box apparently has 0 CDs.

After having dropped a few hundred dollars on Arkiv a few years ago, I stopped buying from it altogether. The reason is simple, its regular price for any label, including Brilliant, is no good. It is the equivalent of the old Tower Records. To add insult to injury, I have to pay both S&H and sale tax and I do not even live in PA ...
Well, I dunno what to say except that if they want to sell the maximum amount of CD's, they have to make them available. I'm sure it's not Amazon's fault. Brilliant doesn't even allow you to buy off their OWN website. It's the beatest thing I"VE ever seen. The good part of them is that put out good CD's. :(

Trust me. I've been trying to buy Brilliant on Amazon from the list that Harry puts up, and least it of the CD's that I"VE wanted, none have been there. An example is that Haydn boxed set that Harry got awhile ago. It won't be available for another week or two. The Lasalle Quartet Schoenberg is finally showing up, but it says it's unavailable and will ship when available. If it they shipped one copy of that it would surprise me.

I think most of their stock is sold in Europe, with little coming to the Americas. Also, as Harry always says, they usually make a whole batch, and once they're sold, they go OOP.
Anyway, you'd be better off getting things from Europe where they are cheaper. :)

Their cheaper, but I live in the states and shipping would eat up at the savings. It's ok, I'm getting the music either from Marketplace Seller or Berkshire when it's not available regularly at a decent price. It's just that I think their decent folks at Brilliant and I hope they can get their products over the pond quicker in the future. ;)

BaxMan, you don't pay VAT when ordering from the US, so the delivery charges usually balance out. Another option is jpc.de, which has a flat rate delivery charge of €12.99 to the US. They also have a huge Brilliant selection, so depending on how much you order, it may work out to be quite reasonable.

S&H charges from US e-tailers can also add up. The Amazon MarketPlace vendors all charge $2.98, even for a $5 CD. I imagine that is also the rate per item, as I have never orderd more than one item at a time from any MP vendor. I have ordered a dozen times from MDT and never paid any VAT. I heard the shipping rate from Germany is outrageously expensive, as someone complained about how much it cost to ship the Andras Schiff's Bach big box, which is only available in Germany.
Well, the reason I do Amazon so much is that we (my family) buy toys, appliances, and things besides music. I'm on the Prime plan so I get two delivery for "free". Also, because points add up, I've probably gotten 10 or 12 free CD's over the last few years.
For all that are interested, I got signals from the Brilliant staff, that they seriously considering making text available either through Internet or simply by adding them to the recordings.
Meaning at least the original text with English, or English alone.
English alone would be unfortunate, as it would leave a lot of people missing a lot of what they are looking for. I can understand that they must cut costs, though. Providing the site is reliable and remains online on the long-term, it could be a fine idea for them to include a large archive of reliably translated printable librettos - it would make their site a valuble "go-to" for classical fans in general, and probably help their sales.
