Well, I favor Miles Davis from the 1950s (have some earlier recordings, but not much into his 'later' periods, but that's me, I guess); just to pick 5 out of the nearly dozen that I own:

Round About Midnight, 1955-56
Miles Ahead, 1957
Porgy & Bess, 1958
Kind of Blue, 1959
Sketches of Spain, 1959

The Cellar Door deserves mention. The more I listen the more I'm amazed not only at Miles' chops but also Jarrett's (on electric piano).

One of the benefits of my new commute is that I've been listening to quite a bit of jazz lately, and Miles in particular.  I'm still exploring a lot of his music for the first time -- truly wonderful stuff.  My current top 5:
