Title: Please recommend me concertos for wind instruments
Post by: Diletante on December 01, 2008, 05:05:12 PM
Good evening.

I like concertos very much, I think it's my favorite type of classical composition.

There seems to be a large repertoire for piano and violin concertos, but not so much for other instruments. So I would like you to recommend me some concertos I could check out for wind instruments.

I especially like how the oboe sounds, but feel free to recommend works for clarinet, flute, french horn, trombone or whatever.

Also, I would prefer music from Romanticism on. Feel free to recommend atonal compositions as well. And if you feel I should definitely check out a Baroque or Classical piece, please say it, too.

Thanks in advance.  :)

Boy, Tanuki - I think that you'll have to be much more specific just to limit the recommendations at first!  ;D

Wind instrument concertos and chamber music span the Baroque into the 20th century - there is just so much available - I probably own hundreds of CDs already of this music, so may be if you can 'zero in' on some of your more specific needs, we can make some recommendations -  :)

But, just to show you the 'vastness' of your request, I have the 4-CD set of Antonio Rosetti's (1750-1792) - Wind Concertos (a completely forgotten composer!) - these include oboe, clarinet, horn, & bassoon works - just wonderful!  But a small 'corner' of what I own - so, please some more specifics as to 'what' you want?  There's an abundance available -  :D

I don't have many recordings of concertos for wind instrument (I prefer violin, cello and piano), but I do like these:

Bach: Oboe Concerto, BWV 1059
Finzi: Clarinet Concerto, Op. 31
Mozart: Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622
Mozart: Oboe Concerto in C, K314
Mozart: Horn Concertos Nos. 1-4
Strauss: Oboe Concerto in D, AV144

Heh, OK, truly sorry about that. Please bear with my 'noviceness'.

How about Oboe or Horn concertos, from late romanticism or 20th century?

That'd be great.  ;)

Well, that limits my previous recommendations to one, the Strauss Oboe Concerto.  :D  But I think you would like the Finzi Clarinet Concerto as well, it's quite good.  :)

Strauss wrote concerti for horn as well, didn't he?

Beyond the boundary specified,

Everything by Mozart
Albinoni Op. 9 No. 2
The ones for clarinet by Weber and Crussel
Haydn's trumpet concerto

Well, below is just a 'starter' consideration - there are so many other considerations - I would strongly recommend exploration of the 'wind' works of the Baroque & Classical eras, and also a consideration of the 'chamber' use of these instruments - my preference is to hear these 'wind instruments' in a smaller group, but up to you - good luck in your explorations and please reply back to this thread -  :D

Arnold, Malcolm - Clarinet Concertos - King (Hyperion)
Cartellieri, Antonio - Clarinet Concertos - Klocker (MDG)
Krommer, Franz - Clarinet Concertos - Naxos
Spohr, Louis - Clarinet Concetos - Hyperion
Stamitz, Carl - Clarinet Concetos - Naxos
Strauss, Richard - Horn Concertos - EMI

Haydn & Telemann - Horn Concertos
Mozart - Clarinet & Oboe Works

Your first stop needs to be the Flute Concerto and Clarinet Concerto of Carl Nielsen. In these works broad richly-scored romantic themes coexist with biting sarcasm and modernist melodic and harmonic formulations. Both of them are very rewarding and a lot of fun for the listener. For the soloists they're among the toughest in the repertory.

Weber's charming Clarinet Concerti and Concertino are always wonderful and quite tuneful.

For those wanting to explore the "depths" of the winds, there is Kalevi Aho's new Contrabassoon Concerto.

Weber's first clarinet concerto is definitely one of the top works ever composed for a wind instrument. It has everything: virtuosity, drama, beautiful tunes and vibrant orchestral backdrop.

Surprinsingly little concertante compositions for wind instruments have been written in the Classical, Romantic and Late-Romantic eras. Nothing by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Berlioz - not to mention Chopin, Liszt, Verdi, Wagner, Sibelius, etc. We have to wait for Strauss, Vaughan-Williams and Nielsen to get them reeds back to the fore. From there on (post WWI) it's been a deluge of good, very good and great works.

Martinu's concerto for oboe and small orchestra (1955) is a dandy.

It's worth noting that the recording I have is a Czech production - Czech Philharmonic to be exact - which means we get the characteristic rich, tart, 'eastern' sound from the solo oboe. A particular treat.

Rautavaara's flute concerto is gorgeous and unusual, too, in that it uses four different members of the flute family: bass, alto, standard, and piccolo. Here it's played by Patrick Gallois:

Surprinsingly little concertante compositions for wind instruments have been written in the Classical, Romantic and Late-Romantic eras.

There are actually tons of wind concertos from the classical period. For instance, 12 clarinet concertos by Karl Stamitz, 2 by Rosetti, 2 or 3 by Krommer plus a lot of names you never hear of.  The trouble is, Stamitz, Rosetti and Krommer sound like weak tea next to Mozart and Haydn. Aside from people like Gurn who specialize in this period, there's little to keep a modern audience interested in this music. So you're left with the flute, flute and harp, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and 4 horn concertos by Mozart, and the trumpet concerto of Haydn. Plus there are some fine flute concertos by CPE Bach which shouldn't be forgotten.

That's pretty much my opinion. It's worth noting that huge advances in instrumental technique and instrument building occurred during that period (roughly 1780-1810). But in terms of musical stature, your description is appropriate. I don't see why someone should seek all wind works from the period simply because they were composed at that tme. Even Haydn and Mozart didn't compose more than highly proficient works for oboe, flute or bassoon. Composers too were in a stage of re-learning their trade with the increased possibilities the 'modern' instruments brought them.

About Schumann's Horn Konzertstück: it never crossed my mind, simply because I took the thread's heading litterally (meaning: excluding brass or symphonic works). Otherwise I'd have gladly mentioned works such as the trumpet concertos of Haydn, Jolivet or Weinberg. Or the Strauss horn concertos, or quite simply, Haydn's delightful Sinfonia concertante.  And Schumann's stunning work, of course  :D

Ralph Vaughan Williams (as has been mentioned by one other) wrote a very nice oboe concerto which sits quite well alongside his more picturesque style of composition. To expand a little, his tuba concerto is also rather interesting. Aho produced an interesting clarinet concerto (coupled on BIS with Nielsen).

I haven't heard this disc (http://www.amazon.com/Strauss-Wind-Concertos/dp/B000059TL6/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1228828092&sr=1-14) but it seems potentially very good for you.

Edit:
Spohr, Louis - Clarinet Concetos - Hyperion

I second Spohr, although I am unsure whether it is entirely worth buying two discs of them rather than just the one. I find it a little difficult to differenciate between them. I guess it depends how much there is to spend :)

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari!  He's known only for operetta, but he's got a good number of very well-made concert works, including an English Horn Concerto and a very Strauss-like Idillio-Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra.

And just to give a few horn concertos, of the late-romantic / early-20th-c. era, I'd recommend those of Reinhold Gliere, Kurt Atterberg, Knut Nystedt (neoclassical and playful) and Lars-Erik Larsson's horn concertino.  Benjamin Lees has a strong horn concerto, but it might be more modern than your criteria. Give it a try, though; amazon lists copies for under $6: http://www.amazon.com/Lees-Concerto-Orchestra-Zwilich-Bassoon/dp/B0000030JN (http://www.amazon.com/Lees-Concerto-Orchestra-Zwilich-Bassoon/dp/B0000030JN).

Anybody mentioned Strauss' delightful Duett-Concertino? It's scored for clarinet and bassoon, with strings and harp accompaniment. Strauss was probably the 20th Century master of wind writing. Well, for the first half of that century, I suppose.

Strangely, I'm not familiar with the Vaughan Williams oboe concerto; must remedy that ASAP!

There's a lovely Chamber Concerto for oboe by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.  And I've heard nothing but good things about the Paul Creston saxophone concerto. 8)

Ned Rorem and Vincent Persichetti have both written concertos for English horn, and they're both very accessible--and on a fine album recorded by Thomas Stacy, English hornist for the NY Phil. :D

Only a couple of weeks ago a new CD has been issued with three (early to late Romantic) flute concertos by Belgian composers was issued : Fétis, Benoit and...??? Gaby Van Riet soloist. I cannot find info on the Internet - will check later at my work.

There are many more 20th century works, well worth exploring :

André Jolivet : concertino for trumpet, strings and piano ( Concerto nr 1) , the second trumpetconcerto, a short but very thrilling & virtuoso , jazz influenced work. Two concerti for flute : a more "classic one with string orchestra , the second ( Suite en concert) with 4 percussion ( a beautiful work!). ( written for Jean Pierre Rampal)

Jacques Ibert ( works for oboe, flute), Henri Tomasi, Honegger ( a lovely "Concerto da camera" for English horn & flute), Frank Martin ( Ballade for flute & chamber orch.). Dutch composer Hendrik Andriessen's Variations on a theme by Couperin ( flute & strings) is gorgeous - and so is Gunnar de Frumerie's Pastoral suite ( flute, harp strings) . Hamilton Harty's "In Ireland" ( flute, harp, orch.) is another little ,tuneful gem - not to be missed! ( check Naxos).

Title: Woodwind Concertos
Post by: SergeCpp on May 08, 2020, 04:41:52 AM
Here I post my playlist of Woodwind Concertos. Actually it is contents of my six playlists, combined, ordered by composer and all movements entries are combined in just concerto name. Major keys are marked by single big letter at end (with flat if needed). No performer names (yes, it is sad point). 190 concertos and 57 hours (56:52:35). I'd listened to them all many times. While collecting (~2 years ago) this playlist many times was considerably reconstructed (some concertos were deleted as not suitable for me and some concertos were added). This playlist version is stable for year or so. Yes, some significant names (Vivaldi, Krommer, Hoffmeister, others) and notable consertos (e.g. Francais) are omitted; initially they all were in my playlists but by listening to them many times I noted that I want to skip them. So it is just playlist of my personal tastes for this time. Anyway I hope it can be useful at least as starting point for beginner listener. I hope also that concertos from this list can be found in YouTube.

Here are a few more "leckerbissen" :

Ferrucio Busoni - Divertimento for Flute and Orchestra Op. 52 (1920)

Jean-Michel Damase, Sérenade pour Flûte et orchestre à cordes.

Marius Flothuis - Concert voor fluit en orkest, Op. 19
