The GMG website costs almost US$2000 per year to run. There are server hosting fees, domain registration fees, hardware and software costs to pay for. It also takes up large chunks of my time to keep it online and running smoothly.
The forum is a labour of love for me. It will always be free to access, and never become a pay site. However, there are ways members can help offset some of the costs of the forum.
- Amazon
You will notice a small banner for Amazon.com near the top of every page. I would ask that if you already buy your music, or any other items, from Amazon, please access Amazon by using these links. Amazon tracks the refering website (in this case GMG) and credits the site with a small commission on all items sold (currently about 6%). It costs you no more to buy from Amazon using this link, but that commission helps defray some of the costs of the forum.
Non-US members can use the flags to access the international versions of Amazon.
- Advertising
Advertising pays for some of the costs of the forum. I have tried to limit the format and tone of the ads to minimise disruption to the layout of the forum page.
- Subscribing
Another way to support the forum is to become a subscriber. All funds collected from subscriptions go into a specially-created account that directly pays for the costs of running the website. By becoming a subscriber, you get rid of all advertising. That's right - subscribers see a clean forum sans ads. At the request of subscribers, the small Amazon link at top right remains for those that want to buy CDs from Amazon and still support GMG.
Subscribers also get a nifty "subscriber" icon below their username in their profile, a larger Personal Message storage box and a warm glow that they are directly keeping the forum going.
Simply click on the "Subscribe" tab in the top menu, and you will see all the subscription options. Payments are secure and processed through Paypal. You can choose to pay via your Paypal account, or if you do not have a Paypal account, you can pay via any credit card or bank account. Of course, subscriptions can be cancelled at any time.
Of course, I understand that not everyone can afford to subscribe or even have the inclination to do so. And that's fine too.
cheers

Here's a tip to offer the Amazon support every time you go to Amazon, whether it is from here or not: click your flag and go to Amazon. Select and copy the address in the bar at the top. Create a shortcut on your "Favorites" bar using this link as the address (it's really easy in Firefox). Then, any time you go to Amazon, it will include the "gmg" tail on it. Here is the link for the US:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/browse/-/573448?tag2=goodmusicguideco
Since I buy there a lot, I hope it helps, even 6% worth. :)

I would definetly help out and use the Amazon links, I would also like to donate occasional money to the site. However, my financial position means I cant commit to a set amount every month but if you pas on your paypal address Ill do what I can.

EDIT: Post removed for a good reason, as it could be counterproductive. :)

I did that and it keeps switching on me. It stays the same for awhile, but then changes with me changing it. :(
I am using Firefox, BTW.
The latest one that it comes up with is: http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=573448
I just switched it back, hopefully it stays put this time.
BTW, Gurn, did the URL address change when amazon "remodeled?"

If you use Gurn's link, Amazon will track all further sales during that sessions and credit GMG with about 6%. You will notice that Amazon will redirect and the URL will change, however, the goodmusicguideco tag is still tracked from that moment on, until you leave the Amazon site.
cheers, and many thanks

George,
Using Firefox, I made a button on the shortcut bar right below the address bar. If you right-click this button, on the menu will be "Properties". Click that and the address that the button points to will be right there. Highlight that address, and then paste the link address I gave you into that box. From then on, it will always go to the Classical Music section, and put the tail into the address header automatically. You can tell if it ever changes because when you go to Amazon normally, it doesn't go to the Classical Music page. Mine has been this way for like 2 years and has never changed. Bought lots of CD's in the last 2 years, too. :D

Just availed myself of the Gurnly link, Rob, though today, a very modest purchase :)

I deleted existing Amazon.co.uk favourite, clicked on the appropriate flag & copied & pasted new link into favourites (Firefox). I will keep checking to make sure the link still contains the words 'goodmusicguide'

Click "Profile > Summary > Paid Subscriptions (on the left sidebar)". There you will see a selection of choices and explanation of them. I already subscribe so I'm not sure if I see exactly what you do, but I think you will see a button called "Order". Thanks for considering this. :)

Don't copy the link from the post, copy the link from the flag! The link in the post get's older whilst the flag link remaineth fresh as newmown hay or some shit.
What I did?...I right-clicked the flag and "copy link address" (that's Chrome-speak) then I went to my browsers bookmark manager and right-clicked the Amazon bookmark to select "Edit" and pasted the flag URL in the Amazon URL box. Now it points to the correct page.

Okay, I'm now totally confused. You've just overwhelmed my small store of geekery.
1)What Amazon link should I be clicking on?
2)What "flag" are you talking about and where do I find it?

2. Look below the last post in this thread, that's the flag/link you should click on. I can see three countries to choose from.

That's good information to know - I too could not find the "flags" until I stopped ignoring what I thought was an ad at the bottom of the page. I'll try to remember to use it next time I buy from Amazon.

Does GMG benefit from any purchase from Amazon using the "flag" link - even third party marketplace sales?

Aye.

GMG admin
Rob,
I think that you should make this site into pay site, if you have some problems handling the fees associated with keeping this site online.
I went and looked around the members who actually subscribed, and I must tell you that I didn’t find anyone, maybe there are some, but I didn’t find them, and by the way that’s including me.
I believe the hesitation of some members is the cost of the membership, The Silver Subscriber comes out to be around $50 dollars a year. And that’s not so little considering that I personally actively pay every year for my own website and domain name and also pay every year to be a member of Deviantart.com.
Now DeviantArt has an interesting concept, it charges its members $25 dollars a year and it gives its members certain privileges that other ‘free members’ don’t enjoy. Things like been able to sell your artworks on their site, creating an individual artist’s page and a few other things that free members just don’t have.
Perhaps you can also use this kind of an idea to persuade members to join and contribute to the site:
1. Free members on GMG will only be able to access certain areas within the forum, but the Diner for example would be only for paying members.
2. The cost of a full member on GMG should be about $20 a year, and paying members will enjoy all the benefits that you listed above and full access throughout the site.
Its better to lower the price and get more members supporting the site, then keeping the price high, with the majority still thinking whether to join or not.
All you need is about 70 to 80 active full members , and that will generate between $1400 to $1600 and you can add the monies that will come from Amazon for those who really can’t even join for a fee of $20 a year, and that should solve the financial concern of the site.
I for one am willing to pay $20 a year if you’ll turn this site into a Pay Site.
Cheers,
Saul

Its not possible to see paying members anymore, for the subscription notice under the avatar is gone, for quite a while now.
Rob will fix that obviously, but since he is very busy, that will take some time.

Yes, thanks for telling me, I was really surprised that no one was a subscriber, well now it seems that its not the case.
But my above suggestions still stand.
-
Hello everyone. Sorry I have been away from the forum - I do check in every day or so to make sure it is up and running smoothly, but I have not had time to answer individual questions and concerns.
Regarding making GMG a pay site, the answer is no. GMG has and always will be free. The costs of running it are not really a "concern". The site is a labour of love and I don't mind paying for its hosting.
The subscription option is still available (its in your Profile), and subscribers do get 2 benefits - an unlimited PM inbox, and advertising is disabled. I have deliberately made the benefits of subscription fairly minor, as choosing to subscribe should be an act of support for the forum for those who can afford, rather than a way of getting extra privileges.
Unfortunately, the display of subscriber icons depends on a software plugin that is not supported by the current version of the forum. I do regularly check to see if the plugin has been updated, and will implement it as soon as it is, but no luck so far.
The Amazon links do need an update. For those who buy regularly at Amazon US, the link to use is This One (http://"http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2F&tag=goodmusicguideco&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957")

Can you get a similar arrangement with amazon.fr? I've got a possible purchase list for them, will wait to see if I can use your link.
-
Just to confirm:
If I use the GMG amazon link to buy, I still have to buy from amazon.com---that is, not from any of the marketplace merchants---in order for GMG to get that 6%, correct??
-
My impression is that any purchase made via the site (i.e., including third-party sellers) benefits GMG.
-
Hmm, I've got about a $100 order ready on Amazon, but as a subscriber, I don't have any of the GMG banner links or flags. Does anyone know/have in their bookmarks the GMG Amazon UK link?
Also, when I follow a link to Amazon, is there any indication on-screen that I have successfully gotten my browsing into the GMG referral umbrella?

Here's the link. All you need to do is log out for a minute and the links will be at the bottom of this page. I'm pretty sure the answer is "no" to your second question.

On my previous order a few weeks ago on Amazon.ca, I tried to link all my purchases via GMG. Nothing on my order though indicates that a portion of the dollar value of the order is going to GMG. How do I tell (or is there even a way to tell) that my order actually did contribute to GMG?
Does anyone know?

Unfortunately, Amazon keeps things quite secret. They only tell me what has been bought each month, but not by who or from which website they arrived from. I can post the sales that Amazon reported sold from my links for last month.
If you see the items there, then the links went through OK. If not, then for some reason the links didn't work.

I buy from Amazon regularly, not just music but you name it, it seems sometimes almost every day some small item. Sometime ago I found a way to contact the GMG administrator to ask: if I went thru GMG to buy non-musical items, would GMG get a small cut also? I never got the courtesy of a reply. Now I have tried to find that link to contact the board admin again but can no longer locate it. Can anyone tell me the answer to my question? Perhaps there's a moderator here. If I can't get an answer, I will no longer go to the trouble of going thru GMG to get to Amazon except for CDs. Also I do not appreciate my earlier query being ignored. Whoever this is is practically begging for us to thru GMG to get to Amazon yet ignores a query on this.

Chaszz, I don't know where you made your inquiry - a private message to Rob, the forum owner/administrator would probably be best, since he (like most here) doesn't see every single post - but I did find this from him, posted last January when he implemented the feature using the ASIN numbers. The answer is yes, the Amazon links work on anything they sell.
Many of you add CD cover art from Amazon to show a particular CD. I have made this a one-click affair.
When posting a message, you will notice a new Amazon icon option - it looks like this ---> (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/Themes/default/images/bbc/asin.gif)
When you click it, it adds some Bulletin Board Code called the ASIN code. Simply put Amazon's 10 digit ASIN number (and nothing else) between the tags, and your image is automatically added.
This works for any item on Amazon; CDs, books, electronics, everything
What's an ASIN number? Every Amazon item has its own unique 10 digit ASIN number - it is shown in the Product Details section of every Amazon item page. For books, this will be the ISBN-10 number.
Disclaimer: As well as displaying the CD image, it adds a small "Buy it" post-it that takes you straight to Amazon's page for that CD. If anyone chooses to buy the item, GMG gets a small commission that helps keep this forum running.
Here is an example. I simply add the ASIN number B000099156 between the tags to get this:
Let me know if you find this helpful, or confusing.
cheers
Rob

I buy from Amazon regularly, not just music but you name it, it seems sometimes almost every day some small item. Sometime ago I found a way to contact the GMG administrator to ask: if I went thru GMG to buy non-musical items, would GMG get a small cut also? I never got the courtesy of a reply. Now I have tried to find that link to contact the board admin again but can no longer locate it. Can anyone tell me the answer to my question? Perhaps there's a moderator here. Well, well. Quite the drama! 8)
Like Brewski, I haven't the foggiest idea either how or to whom you posed this question before.
I have taken the liberty to transport your post to the appropriate thread, which has a lot of relevant info. If you want to send an private message to the administrator - just click on the ID of the opening poster, the Dungeon Master (http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php?action=profile;u=1) himself.

My apologies for your query not being answered. I do try to answer questions as best I can, and as promptly as I can. Perhaps I overlooked your question, or assumed it had been answered by other members.
Yes, all items purchased from Amazon earns GMG a commission, currently 6%. Music, movies, books, electronics, clothes, and everything else, including third party sellers on Amazon. That commission comes out of the usual Amazon price, so you pay no extra. For GMG to get its cut, the buyer must get to Amazon using one of the links from GMG, either the Amazon homepage links at the bottom of every forum page, or any of the image-based product links that members create within forum posts. The only other condition is that the item must be actually purchased within 24 hours of entering Amazon using a GMG link.
Currently, the Amazon commissions earn GMG enough money to pay for about half the costs of running the forum. Subscribers pay for another 20%. Google ads pay a small percentage. I personally (and happily) pay for the remainder.
A very sincere thank you to all who support the forum, financially and otherwise.
cheers

I have been trying for a long time to find out whether my NON-MUSICAL purchases from Amazon help support this site. I just noticed the 'yes' answer to this here, in the first post on this thread. OK. But why were my earlier queries on this matter, one in an email submission to the administrator, and the most recent in a post on The Diner which was REMOVED without comment, both ignored (leaving me in doubt so that sometimes I went thru GMG and sometimes didn't bother)?? Also, if it was more widely known that non-musical purchases count also, by adding this fact to the many banner messages re Amazon, a lot of other members besides I might go thru GMG to Amazon for other purchases, since more and more of us are using Amazon for everything from aardvarks to zebras and in between. As a matter of fact, I rarely buy CDs at all anymore, using my large inter-library system to borrow and copy them. Other members use E-music or Spotify or Rhapsody. But I, and probably they, buy a good deal of other stuff from Amazon.

Chaszz, can't answer your question about the e-mail to Rob (maybe he didn't get it?), but the Diner post is now in *this* thread. One of the moderators thought it would be more appropriate here.
Anyway, as you can see from the post just before yours, Rob replied, and hope this is helpful.

I was the one who took the liberty of moving your post to this thread because it was on topic and, as you've noticed, contains some information relevant to your query.
I do apologize if you feel wronged by that :-\ - I've been taught to respect years of wisdom. Your support to GMG is much appreciated! :)

Thanks all for your replies. Sorry if I got a little emotional about this, but had been trying for a long time to get a reply to my question. I think you will agree there are several topics where this would conceivably fit, and I truly didn't know why my last post had been seemingly deleted. But let's all move beyond this now.
(Er, sorry, must add that the link to "*this*" thread is not working.)
I'd like to repeat here, and in that other thread when I find it, my suggestion that the fact that ANYTHING bought on Amazon can contribute to financing this admirable forum, should be made known in the Amazon banner ads here. Music (and books) are a pretty small proportion of all the goods that I, for one, buy there now, because of its convenience and exhaustive inventory of all kinds of products. Fairly amazingly, I can't remember searching for something on that site in the last two or three years that was not there, and at a competitive price.

Hi,
Do you have a media guide or a list of advertising rates for the forum?
Thanks!

Given there are more and more bargains to be had on Amazon Spain and Italy, is there any particular link to use for those two so that GMG can get its share, just like with the link used for Amazon UK ?
Is it just a matter to copy the same link text as the UK one for the other sites ?

Not yet; but Rob might make it happen if there is enough demand.

There are slight differences between the GMG links for different stores.

I have subscribed again. :o
It seems nonsensical now NOT to pay a pittance of $5 a month for the benifits and wonders I get from GMG. It is the first tab that opens when I open the browser, it is my first point of reference for all things classical, I even use it as a wee Blog in the Diner here and there. I have been here on and off (mostly off, I think, due to cerebal illness) since 2008, it is always a source of good information, musical experimentation, controversy, knowledge and remote friends. Why, if it wasn't for GMG, I would never be writing as I am now. I am very grateful for GMG and its members, and I should stop whining about those Social Media icons >:( and keep reaping the benifits.
Thank you GMG.
:D

"The benefits & wonders": that's GMG in a nutshell!

Just making sure: do we have links for these stores (ES and IT) now?

I will be back as a subscriber as soon as I get my Paypal account fixed.

I would like to subscribe. I do not have PAYPAL. Should I send a money order or something, or is credit card accepted? I would be willing to make a payment for, say 3 year or 5 or whatever.

I would also like to subscribe but can't find the subscribe button mentioned in the original post. Could someone direct me to it please?

In your Profile, go to "Account Settings" and then to "Paid Subscriptions" - you'll see a menu below with three options.

Many thanks for thinking of subscribing.
All subscriptions are processed thru Paypal. However, I believe you do not have to have a Paypal account. PayPal can process your credit card payment without a Paypal account.

Thanks for keeping this great location up and running so smoothly.
-
Pinterest is the tool to integrate, Rob! Start using it (when you like). :D
I have some idea to develop. Try to bind Amazon, GMG and artists, with local retailers. This is gonna be great!
-
Rob, I see other ads. I actually liked these previous Amazon ads showing recordings in rotation which were discussed here. That's a sort of advertion that I think is actually nice.
Henk
-
I see these advertions are still shown, but not the one with recordings that rotates.
When I subscribe I also want those advertations!!
-
I think we need a social media tool like Pinterest, but then text-based instead of image-based.
-
In the absence of the current advertising links to Amazon, please use this link to buy stuff from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/?tag=goodmusicguideco
This ensures that GMG gets credited with a small commission for everything that you buy, and costs you no more (the commission is part of the Amazon price).
In fact, you can bookmark this link for all future purchases.
many thanks

I hope the rest of the Amazon codes are valid too.
So the proper codes for each Amazon location is as follows:
Amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/<asin goes here>/?tag=goodmusicguideco
Amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/<asin goes here>/?tag=goodmusicguideco-21
Amazon Canada: http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/<asin goes here>/?tag=goodmusicguideco-20
Amazon Germany: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/<asin goes here>/?tag=goodmusicgu03-21
Amazon France: http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/<asin goes here>/?tag=goodmusicgu0a-21
Amazon Japan: http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/<asin goes here>/?tag=goodmusicguid-22
For all these links, you simply put the Amazon ASIN number into the code where it says <asin goes here>
If there is enough interest, I may sign up for Amazon Italy and Amazon China (!)
For GMG to get its commission, you need to enter Amazon thru any of the links on the forum, and add items to the Amazon shopping cart within 24 hours. If you leave Amazon at any time, and re-enter NOT using a link from GMG, then that 24 hour window expires and GMG does not get credit for any further purchases.
Some members bookmark the relevant homepage link (as per the flags at the bottom of ever GMG forum page) and use that bookmark to enter Amazon for their browsing and purchases.
cheers, and thanks again to all.

When I subscribe I also want those advertations!!
I want to see them too -- not for myself but just to help with server costs.
-
Is there a way to remind subscribers that they are close to renewal date, so they won't get momentarily flummoxed when they see the Amazon banner asserting itself?
-
Sorry, the subscriptions are automated via Paypal.
Being flummoxed every now and then is probably a good thing. I think a regular flummoxing is a healthy thing. I try to flummox my kids and wife regularly. Also work colleagues. I'm pretty sure I succeed.
If you want a chance at avoiding flummoxing, I recommend you tick the "Make subscription recurring" for automated renewals. (Even then, there is sometimes a few hours (of flummoxing) when the old subscription lapses and the new one kicks in).
cheers, and thanks for your ongoing support

I'd like to support the site, but I for one enjoy the advertisements. They're not obtrusive, and how am I supposed to know about all the new items coming out without them? There sure as hell aren't any record stores around here for me to go to anymore! Advertisements work, that's why they do them. It would be more of a detriment to not see the ads with this type of subject matter then to have the "privilege" of not seeing them.
-
Hey Rob, didn't subscriptions used to auto-renew? I just found out mine lapsed because ads started popping up.
EDIT: I'm a dope. This was discussed in the posts just above mine. Time to go renew. But mine automatically renewed from 2007-today, so I was surprised when that stopped.
Hmm...I'm more financially stable now...maybe I can up to a higher category!
EDIT II: hahahahaha, after 9 years subscribing, my PM box is now 1,048% full.
-
UPDATE
Hey Rob,
GMG says my subscription ended on Sept 20 and that I'm no longer enrolled.
On the other hand, PayPal says it automatically transferred a $50 subscription payment to you on Sept 21.
Please help!
-
Brian, I am not certain how often Rob checks in. It might be an idea to PM him.
Cheers,
Mike
-
I've sent Rob an email msg, or rather, forwarded him the email msg from Paypal which says my subscription renewal has been cancelled. Is there some box I ought to have ticked? Anyway, this duffer needs some guidance.

Subscribing
Another way to support the forum is to become a subscriber. All funds collected from subscriptions go into a specially-created account that directly pays for the costs of running the website. By becoming a subscriber, you get rid of all advertising. That's right - subscribers see a clean forum sans ads. At the request of subscribers, the small Amazon link at top right remains for those that want to buy CDs from Amazon and still support GMG.
Subscribers also get a nifty "subscriber" icon below their username in their profile, a larger Personal Message storage box and a warm glow that they are directly keeping the forum going.
Simply click on the "Subscribe" tab in the top menu[...]
Say, Rob . . . my subscription renewal was not accepted for a reason which I have not yet fathomed.
So I thought the solution might be, to set up a fresh subscription.
But I am not finding the "Subscribe" tab. Help a chap out? TIA.

Although GMG sent me to PayPal to complete the transaction, and it appeared to be completed, I still do not see it as activity when I check my account. Not sure if this is just a normal delay in the process, or an indicator that it still ain't working.

Nice!
I should try again, soon. Repeated failure has dulled my motivation, I admit.

My PM box is still glutted. Just did some serious pruning, probably deleted about half the messages I had. But, since I need to bring it down to about 10% of the original volume, I still have significant work ahead.
Thing is, while I gladly own that the vast majority of the messages are comparative trivialities that I could slash without a moment's thought, interspersed is the odd bit of contact info, or a personal message which I do not want to just pitch in the virtual trash.
My preferred solution would be, to renew my subscription. But . . . I has gave up hope, suh.

Vandermolen, just a note, not just to you who may not wish to do so, but to anyone who gets their inbox in a jam. You can always go back and do a bit of housecleaning on some items which you saved for no particular reason, and once you get their number under control, your inbox becomes a viable entity again. That was one of the travails of being a non-subscriber, but can be useful for subscribers too. Even with great space, I still go back and take a broom to mine on occasion... 0:)

I'm aware of this option, however, my 'Silver Subscriber status suggests that I should have a capacity of 1000 messages but my box stopped functioning after about 300 and I am no longer designated as a subscriber at all, although the monthly payment is still apparently going out of my bank account.
