Italian Baroque fans that aren't familiar with this set: take note...
Because Evaristo Felice Dall' Abaco is a winner and this stuff compares favourably with similar set music by Albinoni, Corelli, Geminiani, et all. Elegant and beautifully phrased performances. Recommended.  :)

Seconded  :)
Reality trumps our fantasy far beyond imagination.

As usual with Schmid, these are thoughtful, refined yet impassioned accounts of both works. Immaculate intonation and perfectly controlled vibrato from the soloist, excellent playing from the fine Pannon Philharmonic orchestra. Recorded in the excellent acoustics of the Kodaly Centre in Pécs, southern Hungary. If only the two Rhapsodies had been added...

Glazunov: Symphony No. 8 [Serebrier]

I like the wonderfully engaging and expansive opening of the work and thankfully the first movement continues in that vein. I also find the music in this movement to be somewhat questioning but always positive and optimistic in tone. The tone, however, changes in the beginning of the second movement. It is a wonderful contrast to that of the first movement. It is dark, threatening and menacing in places and it has a disconcerting atmosphere generally. The music itself is still wonderful with very fine orchestral writing that can also be poignant as the movement progresses. A wonderful sense of tension and excitement pervades the third movement. I find the orchestral writing, once again, to be terrific. The opening tone of the final movement is slightly menacing but this changes as the movement progresses. It transfers to a light, lyrical and, once again, positive and optimistic atmosphere. The work concludes with a satisfactory and definitive resolution.

New arrival and a replacement for one of my previous sets:

Brahms, Johannes - Symphonies & Other Orchestral Works w/ the Swedish Chamber Orchestra directed by Thomas Dausgaard; for those interested, some recent discussion in the dedicated Brahms Thread; 4 discs total conveniently packaged in separate sleeves, plus four original booklets from the single releases (the first disc is a SACD, the others not - no problem for me w/o the super audio equipment).  MusicWeb Reviews attached; did not add the numerous Fanfare reviews which were generally positive - Hurwitz's nasty comments on Symphony No. 2 if you want to visit ClassicsToday for a laugh! - what an a**hole - Dave :)

The universe is change; life is opinion. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

People would rather believe than know - E.O. Wilson

Propaganda death ensemble - Tom Araya

Klavier1

A very impressive debut from this young pianist.

Prokofiev: Symphony No. 3 [Weller]

I find the musical language of the first movement to be very engaging. Its mixture of, relatively, lyrical passages with vast amounts of tension and drama is wonderfully balanced. The juxtaposition of different tones is also very appealing. The slow movement is a wonderfully atmospheric piece of music. Once again, the different tones and moods are very engaging. These are created by some very imaginative and inventive scoring. The third movement is all about tempo and dynamics and Weller offers a very exciting presentation. The scoring here is, once again, very imaginative and inventive. The final movement is packed with drama, tension and excitement. The scoring is wonderful. Weller drives it all very well indeed.

Not that it changes the quality of the music-making here - all 4 discs ARE recorded in Hybrid SA-CD multi-channel sound/CD stereo and very fine they are in any audio format.  It just happ-ens that only the booklet for Symponhy 1 has the SACD logo on the booklet.  But if you look at the back of each liner they refer to the hybrid SACD format.  What I do find hard to believe is that these discs were made with only the number of string players in the image above.  My strong sense jsut from what I hear is that more players were brought in for these recordings......

Thanks RS - the SACD format would be a joy to hear but I'm an oldster and don't plan to go beyond 2-speaker stereo, so fine w/ whatever format the CDs were processed - BUT, the bottom line for me at least, is that the performances are excellent for my ears regardless of the number of musicians used, and at times the orchestra does sound larger than the one shown.  Dave :)

P.S. that pic was just grabbed off the web so not sure about the numbers shown and subsequently used in the Brahms recordings?

Sounds interesting Dave.  I've been listening to some Bach preludes when I'm not breaking in those Pettersson symphonies that I like... but this weekend I'll give the Dausgaard a try.
