Lisztianwagner

Arnold Schönberg
Die Jakobsleiter

Pierre Boulez & BBC Symphony Orchestra

Definitely a magnificent work, impressive for the dramatic strenght, the variety of sonorieties and timbral colour; all the musical, vocal and orchestral resources are merged at an highest level of expressive intensity. What a pity Schönberg wasn't able to finish it.

My Musical Musings

Traverso

Symphonic Addict

Quote from: Roasted Swan on April 16, 2023, 03:40:52 AMYesterday I was blown away all over again by this impressive disc;

The music of Joly Braga-Santos has often been enthusiastically discussed on this forum and rightly so.  This is a tremendous disc with 2 finely wrought, superbly played exciting works.  The back of the disc mentions how Braga-Santos wished to create a form of Latin Symphonism with an element of monumentalism.  This he does in spades.  The sub-15 minute Symphonic Variations deserve to be heard in any concert programme while the 53 minute Symphony is powerful, engaging and effective from first bar to last.

If you enjoy tonal, emotionally clear and direct music but do not know these works do seek them out.  And just in case we think composers are marginalised on account of race or gender worth noting that not a single work of Braga-Santos (Portugal's most significant 20th century composer) has ever been played at the Proms.  Hilarious to think that Florence Price's symphony 3 is on the recent Classic FM "20 Greatest Symphonies Ever" list while this infinitely superior work here - to name but one superior work to the Price - languishes little known........

Agreed, even his forbidding and more advanced late works are also splendid and gripping.
The current annihilation of a people on this planet (you know which one it is) is the most documented and at the same time the most preposterously denied. The terror IS REAL!

Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Oboe Quartet

A neglected masterpiece.

The Adagio is to die for.

I think I'll give that a spin today as well.  It has been a long time.  It is funny that is exactly the kind of work I wanted to rediscover in the big box, but I'll be opening the Prazak box instead.

Have not heard this in years. It sounds for some reason very appealing right now. Boulez at the peak of his devotion to the serialist cause.

I don't know his recordings (so far anyway), but I do love that Original Masters series; I have a number of them.  :)  Do you have any favorites from that set Karl?

From this Schneiderhan box, do you mean, PD? It's all so darned good! On one hand, I'm inclined to call the pieces which were new to me my favorites (Martin, Bruch) on t'other, some concerti which I hadn't heard in a while sounded really tasty (Beethoven, Brahms) And the Bach solo Partita, of course was brilliant.

Yes, the Schneiderhan box.

I don't recall hearing any of his recordings before, but his name is familiar to me.

A beautiful work indeed. Early Boulez at his most serial, but also profoundly lyrical... I should revisit this work soon.  :)

Ended up listening to the whole disc, plus the 2nd Piano Sonata. Enjoyed all immensely. Been a long time since I've listened to much Boulez.

Now playing:

George Frideric Handel: Oboe Concertos Nos. 1-3. David Reichenberg, Trevor Pinnock, The English Concert

Stunningly beautiful works—very tranquil and pastoral.
