Well, there are alternate units which I expect you could find a way to work: portable ones.  Don't suffer.  Find a way to make it work, not just for you, but also those who care about you...and (God forbid) those that might need to rescue you.

Yes, they're called fans.  ;D  Thanks for your concern but I'm in no danger of needing to be rescued. I grew up in Illinois without a/c and lived in Florida so I'm used to being hot. People managed to live for thousands of years without a/c, I reckon I can manage for a couple days.

That sounds very much like central Vermont. The building where I teach has only a few rooms with a/c, none of which I teach in this semester. Everyone used to say that the heat was only a problem the first week of classes. We're beginning the 3rd week now, and the forecast highs for later in the week are around 28ºC (83ºF). That is absolutely wild that it was cooler in South Carolina. It was in the 60s and 70s this long weekend, and I spent a lot of time outside reading.

Lovely day here:  Currently sunny and low 60's with expected high of about mid-70's.   :)

This was hard to watch.  Wild horses escaping wild fires in Nevada.

I grew up there. Wild horses would come down from the mountains to our front yard. We camped so often at Davis Campground. My Father and I once hiked from that campground all the way up to Tahoe Meadows. Fires have been real bad in the Sierra Nevadas.

This was the 5th and hopefully last consecutive day of 100+F temps (over 38C) for the year here.  I don't have AC, but I did hang out some days with family who have AC.  We also drove up to Palomar Mountain (6000 foot or 1800 meters elevation) for some heat relief.  It's the warmer overnight temps (74 was the low this morning) that made it especially oppressive.

Tomorrow is supposed to be 10 degrees cooler and then the next day 10 degrees cooler than that.

Yes, I'm looking forward to the cooldown. What irritates me about the forecasts is that during heatwaves like this they consistently underestimate the highs. So if Weather Underground says tomorrow's high will be 82 I know it will really be closer to 88.

I find that I'm able to sleep comfortably enough with a fan blowing on me at night. The one good thing about this kind of weather is the low humidity.

That must have been cool!  Would they graze on your lawn/plants?

Yes, hard to read about the wildfires there.  Do you have any relatives and/or friends who live in the effected area?

p.s.  Temps are expected to be about 10 degrees higher today (higher than normal too).

Yes, the horses would graze on the lawn. I have childhood friends that live there but I haven't talked with them since I moved so many, many years ago.

@Florestan (and others here who might have been effected),

I've been reading and seeing images of flooding in countries like Romania, Czechia, and Poland.  Last I read, parts of Germany are also bracing for flooding.  How are you doing and what have you seen heard about in your respective countries/areas?

Are you on higher ground or not much rain in your area?  In any event, glad that you're o.k.

Stay safe, anyone living in Florida. Helene is a category four now.

It's already well north of me--we had a very windy cloudy day on the Atlantic side, but nothing bad.

I think the GMGer most directly in the storm path is @Mirror Image although it should be considerably weakened by the time it gets to him. I'm guessing he's busy checking the trees around his house, given what happened the last storm he went through.

ETA: looking at the rain forecast, it looks like South Carolina will get more rain than South Florida

We just had a tropical cyclone last week, and it rained so much that my big dog bowl went from empty to filled up in a day. There will be 45-50 mph gusts when I drive into work tomorrow morning.

That means you'll also get more wind than I did. I'm fairly sure the wind here stayed in the 30-35 mph range.
