One of the best performers of Scarlatti on guitar i've encountered on youtube:

Brian

Cross-posted from the Listening thread:

Wow, Meisinger's very personal approach really pays off here. The Tárrega "Capricho Árabe" sounds very convincingly Arabic, full of special effects that Meisinger exaggerates with good taste to enhance the North African feel. His Albéniz "Asturias" is also unique - a slow take (7:44) of a piece that many performers treat as a speed race to show off how fast they can handle its fearsome repeated notes. Meisinger digs especially deep in the final coda. For Carlo Domeniconi's now-classic Koyunbaba, the guitarist takes the composer's advice and improvises a four-minute prelude before reaching the published score.

One peculiar feature of the disc is very, very faint hiss, almost like tape hiss. (I listened in a quiet room on good headphones, over Qobuz, which inserts gaps between tracks; I doubt you'd hear this any other way.)

"Outwardly limited, boundless inwardly." - Goethe

Is anyone familiar with Paul Galbraith? He's coming to my city for a concert on Thursday.

Wonderful and unique guitarist with 8-string guitar.

Classical guitar fans, I had the opportunity to go to a recital in my city earlier this year, but unfortunately wasn't able to attend and disappointed that I missed it.  Although I have not heard any of his performances or recordings, I know that he is esteemed and has made a number of recordings on Naxos.

I am especially bummed that I missed the concert because our city and province has a high % of people with Ukrainian heritage who have immigrated here over since the early half of the 20th Century. My spouse is half Ukrainian.

For those who have heard his recordings, any thoughts?

Quote from: Brahmsian on April 12, 2023, 08:31:24 AMJust listening to this disc........Great minds think alike, Brian! I was just thinking the same thing regarding the 51 contradanzas by Manuel Saumell and was on the lookout to see if all 51 have been recorded, but to no avail.  :D
Hey @Franco_Manitobain - good news, someone has! It was back in the 90s on an obscure Cuban label but is available on several streaming services... "Cervantes & Saumell: Danzas y Contradanzas (CD2)" ...oh and one more thing, the complete recording is on the original piano, not guitar. Still, I'll take what I can get!

The sound samples of this (and the playing!) seemed spectacular to me.

He's an absolute beast and one of my favorites! I like both of his Naxos recordings, but I prefer the earlier one:

This is the newest one:

This concert took place about 80 miles away from me, and somehow I missed it!. The entire recital is stunning, but especially the last work, Rodrigo's Toccata. One would have to look long and hard for a more difficult piece that was written for the guitar. It starts at 51:26.

Again, thank you @Bachtoven for posting the Topchii concert.

Here it is again for others to view. Well spent time.  :)

Here for interest was the program, and I thought it was a great and varied program. I thought he excelled in all of it. He seemed just as comfortable and assured with Bach as he did with Gilardino's Etude No. 19! Such technical mastery without taking anything away from the depth, poignancy and soul in the performance.

Program:

Bach - Lute Suite in E minor, BWV 996
Sylvestrov - Kitsch Music 1, (arr. Topchii)
Brouwer - La Gran Sarabanda
Tansman - Passacaille
Gilardino, Angelo - Etude No. 19 (Jondo)
Dumont, Arnaud - Hommage a Ravel
Rodrigo - Toccata

Encore

Barrios - Un Sueno En La Floresta

There are many highlights for me, but just mentioning the Gigue final movement from Bach's Lute Suite in E minor BWV 996. Wow, the performance floored me!  :o  That starts at 18.39 in the video
