The Wheel of Time has been cancelled. The show ended on a cliffhanger.

Homicide: Life on the Streets.

Isn't bad! Shades of Hill Street Blues...

That's unfortunate. I hope some other network (a prime opportunity for Apple TV+?) will pick it up and continue the series.

Quote from: JBS on May 21, 2025, 07:02:38 PMI started reading Casual Vacancy, and couldn't finish even the opening chapter. The needlessly detailed description of a fatal heart attack seemed outright sadistic to me, and put me off from any interest in the rest of the book.

(It certainly wasn't something to be found in children's story.)

If that first chapter put you off, it is very lucky you didn't continue. I actually considered the first chapter somewhat comedic, but the novel became so dark after that that I couldn't continue.  I think her detective/mystery series is brilliant, but it's often exceedingly violent and disturbing as well.
It's all good...

Der lächelnde Schatten

I've been rewatching some Seinfeld via Netflix (I own all nine seasons on DVD but it's easier to just stream it sometimes). Anyway, one of my 'Top 3' sitcoms without question (my other two are Frasier and Wings).

I'm on the 2nd season of The Expanse. It certainly deserve its accolades but is fraught with inconsistencies concerning its attempt at techno-realism. Overall I give it a B+ for effort on that score. I think fans of classical pre Wars-Trek scifi will appreciate the series.

The Wheel of Time, Season 3 (2025)
Rosamund Pike

I agree with @DavidW  that this is the best season of the show. Since I haven't read the books, it had been tough remembering the characters and plot threads in previous seasons, but this viewing was the easiest for me thus far.

Too bad the series was cancelled. They obviously poured a lot of cash into this season and it looked great.

Clearly, I need to watch this. Thank you.

In British TV, everyone eventually becomes a detective!

I'm telling you, even these people will eventually start solving murder mysteries:

The "squeaky wheel got the grease".  Called my cable provider after frustrations regarding watching tennis; I was transferred (finally) to the "retention department"...had a lovely and helpful experience there talking to a gentleman.  I was given extra channels and also a price reduction and am back to watching more of my beloved tennis.  :)

Trying hard now to get a hold of my friend who I think would like to watch the upcoming match.

Watched and enjoyed Netflix series The Four Seasons. Must be good as we watched the lot over this weekend. This dispels my theory that humour doesn't cross the Atlantic either way as we found it very funny. Brilliant script and acting centred around a group of friends made up of three middle-aged couples who do seem to have more holidays - sorry vacations - then is good for them. Netflix promise a second series; good.
You must have a very good opinion of yourself to write a symphony - John Ireland.

I opened the door people rushed through and I was left holding the knob - Bo Diddley.

I watched Doctor Who: Season 2. The first episode was bad, but all the rest of the episodes were just flat-out great. Not only stronger than the first season, but it was a true return to form for Doctor Who. I felt like I was watching RTD's Ecceleston and Tennant era episodes.

The big reveal of the identity of Mrs. Flood is not satisfying to me because, without giving anything away, she was a fairly esoteric villain from 80s Who. And the actual iconic villain, I really think, should have had his costume, perhaps updated for 2025, instead of the silly CGI monster that we got instead.

The plot twist that was the result of a hasty rewrite for the end of the show surprisingly worked very well, and was much, much better than Ruby's anti-twist from last season. It is up in the air whether the show will be renewed. I don't think Doctor Who brings in the numbers that Disney was hoping for.

Rating: 4.5/5, the best since the Capaldi era.

Andor: Season 2 (2025)
Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O'Reilly
Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker

I assume this was the concluding season of Andor, a dark and heavy conspiracy thriller. This series has been quite unlike the rest of the SW universe, with adult themes not meant for the young'uns.

Brassic - season 4 (Netflix)
Alma's Not Normal - season 2 (BBC)

Both sarcastic, hilarious and heart-warming each in their own very peculiar ways

Next : Dept Q with Matthew Goode on Netflix

Finished today. Slick dark comedy, well-acted, watched it with some interest... but most probably I'll forget it by next week. It gestures at big themes like success, disillusionment, and the American Dream, but never really digs in. The ending falls flat, and any social critique is barely there. Lots of style, not much substance.

I've viewed Dept. Q.  This is a superior British police drama:  I'm hoping there'll be more seasons.  The Brits really know how to do these police dramas when they put their minds to it.

I've finished season 3 of X-Files and season 5 of Vera. The S6 premiere was the darkest I've seen. It is also the highest rated on IMDb. The two parter between S3 and S4 of the X-Files starts to unravel the mystery behind the central plot.

Just finished Mad Men, second time around. I think I watch the whole series from 2007 to 2012 so I had forgotten a lot. I started at season 5 and then all the way to the end of season 4 where everything fell into place.
It is weird to watch a series after 15 years, how much differently you interpret things.
Although Mad Men is on a constant high level, it takes a while to lift off, I think somewhere around season 2 things get really compelling and I think my favorites are season 4 and 5.
I will always love the image of a time sketched here in which I never lived myself. The psychological development of the main characters is just amazing and it is all brought with much subtlety and humor.
It grieves me a bit now that this journey ended again.

The first half of life is spent in longing for the second, the second half in regretting the first.
