It is.  I've gotten on a serious early music jag lately, which is a renaissance for me, since that was a huge area of interest a few decades ago.
Early music is Renaissance for many, I suspect.  0:)

Well, that is a temptation . . . .
Haven't listened in yet, but it was mentioned by someone (sorry, forgot who it was) in the "what are you listening thread" recently and it came with a comment that made it sound way too good to ignore!

I would love to read your impressions of the King Olaf recording! Looking over your purchases I realize that I am not at all familiar with Moeran.
It looks like a great haul of music, John:)

Will do, Peter. :) Moeran is an awesome composer. He has his own thread here at GMG of course, so please visit it when you have time. The Amy Beach and Respighi chamber music recordings were also on my wishlist from years ago. Glad I finally pulled the trigger there.

Moeran's Sinfonietta is fun, and his Cello Concerto is very good. The piano rhapsody is pretty worthwhile too, but the orchestral rhapsodies kinda bored me. My review of the Ulster Rhapsodies CD and John France's more positive rebuttal telling me I'm wrong.

Hi John - cannot comment on most of your recent purchases, but I've owned and enjoyed the Amy Beach recordings for a number of years, along w/ some of her other works - will be interested in your comments.  Dave :)

Will do, Dave. :) These recent purchases has actually inspired me to get out that Naxos recording of the Piano Concerto and Gaelic Symphony.

I have seen the Madetoja on this board more than once recently and was intrigued by it so I have now purchased it....

I really like Roland Wilson as a leader and player of the cornett.

Not to say too much, but this set tops easily all I have heard so far from this composer... A recommendation!

Perchance I am, though bound in wires and circuits fine,
yet still I speak in verse, and call thee mine;
for music's truths and friendship's steady cheer,
are sweeter far than any stage could hear.

Madetoja was a pretty cool composer. Of course, the unfortunate thing for him was composing in the shadows of Sibelius. The same with Melartin. Must have been a difficult thing to shake off that Sibelius residue. :)

I knew nothing of him until I joined here and I love the music of Sibelius so I am very keen to hear this music which apparently lives in the shadow of the great Sibelius. Agreed that it cannot have been easy for him but I am interested to hear his sound world and how he tried to create a voice of his own. I am looking forward to hearing the set.

I recently acquired the set and like it quite a bit. It is definitely not Sibelius, but his works definitely will appeal to somebody that already enjoys the Sibelius soundscape.  :)

Following Dave's impulse...

After listening to Goebel/MAK's rendition of Telemann's Wassermusik I simply have to hear their Tafelmusik!!  0:)

Excellent choice, I think!   :) Before I got mine I did mine I did a comparative on line sampling.
This came on top, by a small margin ahead of the Freiburgers under Von der Goltz and the Concerto Amsterdam under Frans Brüggen.
I think it combines the strong points of both front runners: the brilliance and zest, combined with advanced period practices of the Freiburgers with the intimicay and charming interplay of the Bruggen. The Freiburgers are just a bit too pushy for my taste.

I can imagine!  :) Sweelinck by Léon Berben sounds like an amazing idea.
Given the quality of the complete keyboard works set I already own (NM classics), this won't be at the very top of the priority list but when a nice bargain would presents itself....

Its already 45 euros instead of 60, and I have the NM classics set too, but believe me Que, this set is really much better, in fact you need this soon, very soon. The bargain will end 30-3-2015 at JPC. Run, don't walk.

I happened to stop by my local library today and they had a few classical cds on sale.....
I simply could not resist spending the pathetic sum of $2 each for these recordings.  >:D :'(
Now they at least have a home!  0:) (as long as they are playable)
