I knew she'd had brain cancer a few years back.  :(

What a composer and performer.

Outside of what she provided for ex-Paul, Gary Burton's various groups dug into her tunes with a vengeance.
She worked with Charlie Haden to sublime effect.
When, a few months before his death, Rachmaninov lamented that he no longer had the "strength and fire" to compose, friends reminded him of the Symphonic Dances, so charged with fire and strength. "Yes," he admitted. "I don't know how that happened. That was probably my last flicker."

The heart of the matter ...

Back in '77, I had a short correspondence with her.
A beautiful and crazy person!

I'm sorry to hear about this, but she had a long and very successful career.
My favourite albums - 4x4, Fleur Carnivore, and The Very Big Carla Bley Band.  I also have a treasured live big band recording off BBC radio in the 80s, includes a great rendering of the Pink Panther theme.

:o

Curious. Have you heard the WATT/ECM records?
