Sacred choral work from the Romantic(?) era

I don't have any clips, I'm afraid. But I shall describe what I heard to the best of my ability.

The work was not something that you'd expect from the Classical era or earlier.

There was a part where a tenor (I think it's a tenor, but I could be wrong) was singing Gloria which was then followed by different parts of the choir singing in counterpoint starting with the "women's section."

The back came the tenor singing Sanctus <something>, which was followed by the chorus, and then back to Gloria, but this time also accompanied by the stroke of a drum at regular intervals.


Does that sound familiar?  :-\
