Free MP3 Download: Stravinsky Conducts The Fire Bird in 1927

This was the first electrical recording of the Firebird. It was recorded in France and was released on Columbia in 1927. This recording is a bit hard to find. I was lucky enough to find a pristine blue wax pressing from which I made this transfer. Enjoy!

Right-click the link and select 'save link as..." and it will open a save box with 'firebirdsuite1927.mp3' as the filename. Easy-peasy. :)

Worked for me.  I skipped to the ending.  Always interesting to hear how the composer conducted his or her own work.  I always wondered if Stravinsky wanted those chords leading up to the big ending (up to the 27 minute mark) so staccato.  The answer is, he did, I guess.  I like them less so.

Stravinsky's take on this is much closer to Rite of Spring than Rimsky. Most current conductors do it the other way around.
