Eating leftover Starbucks. :P

Random: There's a scene in the wonderful Reese Witherspoon movie WILD in which she comes down out of the mountains where she's been hiking for the last couple of months and enters a town in Oregon on August 9, 1995.

The town is full of heartbroken hippies. "Ripple" is playing. It's a beautiful, sad scene.

RIP, Jerry Garcia.

Trader Joe's has discontinued its lovely enchilada sauce.

I ordered an alternative from Amazon.

That's sad.  I know that you were a big fan of it.  What did you particularly like about it?  Just curious (foodie here).

I'm not a foodie, though I like food. The sauce is mild, so it goes well with the tamales I use it with which have a strong flavor. That way they don't clash.

Waiting for my Lyft to work. At least there's a good reaction video waiting for me...

After learning about the Windows 11 feature that takes a screenshot every five seconds, I switched to Linux.

I don't care if they added in an opt-out, and then later you need to opt-in... IT IS JUST TOO MUCH. FAR TOO MUCH. And you know they are just waiting to turn it back on again.

I've had it. I'm done. I'm on Linux now.

Er, why are they taking a screenshot every five seconds?  *I've never heard of that before.  How is that supposed to help the consumer?  I can understand turning on an automatic backup, but...er...huh?  I know that there are also options in terms of sending reports to say Apple or Firefox (which are, they say, to help improve their programs--and I believe are also supposed to be anonymous).  And one can opt out in the settings.

*And sounds alarming!  Privacy?  And security?

I sold Intel and bought Clorox.

I sold my heinous KKR shares and bought IBM.

Intel is clearly a special case due to the catastrophic failure of the 13th/14th generation i7 and i9 CPUs. I think the i5s are good, as I haven't heard a word against them, and I'm inclined to get a 5 series Arrow Lake CPU if everything is good with them.

Yet another reason to stay with Win10 ( not that it's anything close to perfect, but I know my way around it well enough ).

And as far as privacy goes, Apple is worse...

It is called Recall and is supposed to help you search for anything you ever saw on your PC. But I don't think anyone asked for it, and it doesn't take paranoia to wonder the actual reason behind it. Since it is tied in with their copilot AI, I'm guessing it is training. AI is always starving for data to train on.

Whatever the proper intentions, it is just waiting for the unscrupulous to use it to steal private data.

I don't have screen shots on my computers done by Apple.

I read a bit about it and it sounds like that it's something that you need to opt into now; however, how long was it operating without possibly people knowing about the issue and/or being giving the option to opt out?  I believe (due to a bit of quick googling) that maybe June was when it was first introduced?  Sorry, getting tired now....

Having worked at Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, CA. for four years, I would not be so confident.

While some of what I saw there ( such as their supercomputers ) was beyond cool, I was told or overheard enough to put me off of Apple forever, as far as their products are concerned.

Do you expect Google to be better? (I'm thinking of Android.) At least on the iPhone, there is an automatic opt-out of third-party data collection.

The fact is, any smartphone can potentially be vulnerable to third-party data collection using the phone's hardware, independent of the OS. To combat this, Apple started designing dynamic MAC addresses into iPhone some years ago, and Android  followed suit a couple of years afterward.

( Btw, Apple can track your iPhone whenever they feel a need to, regardless of any user settings or preferences. )

For maximum privacy, put your phone in an electrostatic bag before any brick-and-mortar shopping, and power it off when not actually in use.

Quote from: hopefullytrusting on August 18, 2024, 08:54:32 AMFor maximum privacy, you need to remove the battery. Off doesn't always mean off, just as delete and incognito don't mean what they purport to do.

Although, I don't care, but if privacy is your aim.

You have to remove the battery and smash the phone. I learned that from watching Breaking Bad. Too bad you can't get the battery out of an iPhone without specialized tools.

Android was create by a company whose explicit business model is scraping data off you and selling it. I wouldn't claim that Apple products offer anonymity, but at least there is some attention to throttling the reaping of information from you.

I don't trust any of them, but I trust Android less. I remember stories a few years back that Facebook suffered revenue loss when iOS implemented a privacy feature.

Yes, Google's AdSense accounts for about 70% of all ad revenue online. They make money primarily from data collection and ads. They have been at war with people using YouTube adblockers for years. I don't believe that all big tech companies treat privacy equally.
