A thread for song adaptations or covers that are not merely bad but outstandingly awful in some way.

(Ferneyhough's adapatations are ineligible in this thread.  8))

Not awful at all.

I love "Gangsta's Paradise" (the original) and this is a cool cover.

Completely destroys what makes the original work.

Makes it something original, and not just a copy.

I think we can include any and all of Pat Boone's rock covers.
It's all good...

I would have mentioned those, but I fear Sarge will pipe up with praise and expressions of admiration.

I also liked the song you put up (as terrible)--although I don't think I've ever heard the original.  I definitely prefer covers which do something radically different with the source material.  One of my favorite covers is the Los Angeles punk band "X"'s punk-folk cover of The Doors' "Soul Kitchen".

In that category the best is the Pet Shop Boys cover of Always On My Mind, which I think is fabulous. But this is a bad cover thread.

As some favorite English language "evergreens" were ripped from French chansons (e.g. My Way) there was a broad fashion of Germanizing international hits with ludicrous and often soppy German lyrics from the 50s until the 70s or so. Often the content was completely turned around. "Memories are made of this" became a song about homesickness or exile, "The Ballad of the Green Berets" a vaguely anti-war-song, and "The night they drove old Dixie down" about a drug OD of a young man. There are many more but these are among the most famous ones. (They also did this with French and Italian songs, the lyrics are often beyond terrible.)

Listen at your own peril...

;D :D ;D

...actually, I couldn't stand Pat Boone singing his original crap in the 50s. His later rock covers are great comedy records though.

Vanilla Fudge and Spooky Tooth taking on the Beatles. Travesty and sacrilege...or sheer brilliance?  8)

The reason I brought it up is that I am sure many (most?) Doors fans would consider the X cover a travesty, and therefore an "epically awful cover".   Here it is. You may well hate it ???

I like X and the Doors, bands from two very different rock eras but of equal importance to me. I love this cover.

Good one that. It must be truly awful then.

Haha yes, I've seen this one! One of my all time favorite songs.  :'(

Btw, Messrs. Fagen and Becker were astonished by that cover, and not in a good way.
