Reaction Videos

Maybe a year or so ago, l stumbled upon one of the more recent forms of social media, the reaction video.

Iirc, l was looking for clips from Airplane!, my favorite comedy. I had been idling along on YouTube when l decided l wanted just a little bit, one gag from the film.

So l naturally type in the search box, click and up comes someone reacting to the film.

Maybe it's old news to most folks, but it was a surprise to me. The concept seemed a bit weird at first, but after some initial explorations l started to appreciate some of the reactors out there.

A year later, my favorite is " Cassie ", whom you'll find on her Popcorn in Bed channel.

Anyone else into reaction videos?

Anyone else into reaction videos?

Several months ago, I stumbled across a couple of ones of some young ones reacting to music that they had heard for the first time (suggested to them by either friends or followers of their channels).  Kind of fun to see what they thought of them.  They were listening to (or watching old concert videos) of some classic rock/artists.  I did also watch a couple of other ones:  one was of a professional flautist/teacher watching a Tull video (which, if I'm recalling correctly, I.A. was self-taught...which also explained some of his "different" fingering/techniques).

I hadn't heard of "reaction videos" before then.

Great thread idea! 

I am myself HOOKED on movie reaction videos! As a Star Wars fan (before the dark times of Disney) I am especially into "millenials" watching Star Wars movies 1-6 for the first time. Reactions to horror movies are also fun. Some people are just TERRIFIED by movies I consider myself only mildly scary and their (genuine or acted) reactions to jump scares are great entertainment! 

Popcorn in Bed is one of the many channels I watch. Recently she watched Poltergeist 1982 and was terrified.

Not only epic but slow motion black and white epic!   

The strongest physical reaction to a jump scare I have ever had was probably caused by James Wan's Conjuring. It was so strong that I was surprised myself, but still it was maybe 5 % of Cassie's reaction to a jump scare that for me is "funny" rather than scary. Horror movies have become much more scary with time. The Exorcist for example isn't that scary for me (it is still a very good movie!) and Poltergeist (a very lovely and well directed by Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg spooky movie of the 80's) is combination of fantasy and family drama for me rather than horror.

My favorite horror movie reaction channel is probably she's scared.

So here's someone reacting to The Return of the King.

I haven't seen very many of his uploads, but Peter Jackson's first Tolkien trilogy is my favorite " franchise " by a very long road ( goes ever on, and on... ), and I'll give pretty much anyone who's reacting to the films an " audition ".

Note, he's a bit coarse. But at least it's honest swearing, and mostly bleeped to boot.

So here's someone reacting to The Return of the King.

I haven't seen very many of his uploads, but Peter Jackson's first Tolkien trilogy is my favorite " franchise " by a very long road ( goes ever on, and on... ), and I'll give pretty much anyone who's reacting to the films an " audition ".

Note, he's a bit coarse. But at least it's honest swearing, and mostly bleeped to boot.

Oh, I'll check this out later. By seeming chance, I've recently watched both the Rankin/Bass Hobbit and Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings.

I cannot be more specific but there is a video/critique of the Bakshi LotR (in several parts, probably easy to find on ytube) that is absolutely hilarious although that is almost entirely due to the source material.
I saw the Bakshi as a teenager on TV, actually a few years before I read the book (I'd probably read "The "Hobbit") in the late 1980s, long before anyone would thinkg of a "real" LotR movie and had comparably positive memories, probably just because it basically was my first encounter with that story. But it really deserves all the fun that reviewer makes of it.

This was a revisitation for me. I had probably seen it in Rockaway, New Jersey at a midnight showing. There are flaws, no question, but a lot to like, too.

At the end of the reaction he sums up his feelings regarding Jackson's magnum opus, at one point comparing it to the Harry Potter films, which apparently comprise his favorite franchise. He gives the nod to Jackson for making something incomparable, keeping it real and earning my respect in the process.

I'll certainly be watching more reactions from him.

Reaction videos are like partially baffling that they exist/sometimes okay or slightly entertaining/mostly not that interesting. I used to watch them occasionally every now and then, they were okay, but completely stopped. I especially dislike "professional X reacts to Y" videos- just rubs me the wrong way, feels very shallow (and even worse, I usually have no clue who these people are). Idk... IMO the person or subject comes first, not the title- feels halfway like a LinkedIn profile when worded that way.

More baffling is the existence of Mukbang. Just why?.......
