We note with regret that one of the very best Russian composers, namely Valentin Shcherbacheff (1889 to 1952), is absent from the list. Is it we wonder even now not too late to request the inclusion of his name?

Members who have heard his 1919 Nonett for instance will at once realise the justice of our request. Every bar of that work quivers with its composer's sensitivity.
Rule 1: assiduously address the what not the whom! Rule 2: shun bad language! Rule 3: do not deviate! Rule 4: be as pleasant as you can!

Shostakovich has already put in a justly strong showing, I see.

Don, what is the point of this poll? There are many interesting and "great" Russian composers. Why reduce them to 5 "favorite" ones? BTW, you forgot Grigory Kaputnikov, without any doubt one of the most visionary Russian composers of the 20th century.

Brian

You have a pretty limited view of the word "Russian" if Khachaturian is excluded. Yes, he was technically Georgian, but does this mean Stalin would be excluded from a poll of "Favorite Russian Dictators"?

Anyways, I'll vote later when I feel cheerier. It's 11:42 and I just woke up.  :)

Yes, he is. However, you can still vote for him as your "Favorite Soviet Dictator".

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

Oh good! But if we are to split hairs in such ways, Cui was born in Lithuania and Borodin was the illegitimate son of a Georgian nobleman.

Mussorgsky
Stravinsky
Prokofiev
Shostakovich
Scriabin

With a more than honorable mention for Gubaidulina and Schnittke

Then you can start your own polls for favorite illegitimate sons of Georgian noblemen and favorite composers born in Lithuania.  :D
