Say, Sarge: Do you get a kick, as do I, out of the seeming resonance with "American Patrol" in the middle of the Presto?

Never noticed it, Karl. I'll give op.10/2 a listen now:

Edit: Oh yeah!  ;D :D ;D

I've been debating getting this. The problem is that Naxos have a second serenade disc with #5 included. I don't want to get both discs at this point, so the question is: should I complete the serenades or go for the concerto/serenades combo? I haven't been able to come to a decision yet.

If the concertos are as good as the serenades,  you'll want to do both.  (I have both Naxos CDs.)  Maybe CPO has a Fuchs series and you can get the rest of the serenades that way?

BTW, if it eases your decision making process, Arkivmusic is currently running a 3 for $20 special on Naxos.

Thread duty:
R. Strauss:  Orchestral Works, CD 5:  Also Sprach Z., Tod und Verklarung, Rosenkavalier Waltzes.  Staatskapelle Dresden/Kempe  (in the Brilliant Classics issue).

A second listen.  Good stuff.

A good version; his Bach recordings tend to be fine too.

Ignaz Moscheles.

Cello Sonata No. 2 in E major, opus 121.
From, Melodisch-Contrapunktische Studien, opus 137.

As I said in my review of 30-1-2012, this is magnificent music, magnificently performed.  Almost like listening to a predecessor of Johannes Brahms. the same warmth and commitment, and deeply romantic. A one way ticket to your heart. I love the intense playing by Jiri Barta, he ignites the music time and time again.

Deep discount have a similar price, but no shipping. CPO are also pretty fairly prices at under $10 per disc for multiple disc sets and about 10.50-10.75 for single discs. I have another week to think about it.

Mozart: Piano Trio No. 3 In Bb Major, K 502

Listening to Disc 1 of this set again - this music is probably not among Mozart's best but it is a pleasant listen nonetheless. The performance here from the Beaux Arts Trio is good I think.
