Make sure you have plenty of free time  :D I have a hard enough time telling them apart, and to make matters worse, some of them seem to have both an "official name" and a "colloquial name" (e.g. "Moscow Distinguished Academic Ensemble Symphonic Orchestra Named After Dmitry Ilyich Prokofiev and Under the Direction of Iggy Pop" might just be known as "Moscow Symphony Orchestra")

Somewhere-in one of the music magazines I think, could have been International Record Review-there was once an article on the very subject of Russian orchestras and their (very frequent) changes of name. I shall try to hunt it out!

I do not think LA has been in the same league as these cities when it comes to classical music.  It is even outclassed by such cities as Boston and Chicago when it comes to music or even museum establishments ...

Gosh(that's the British way of saying something I can think of other words for ;D), you change your name so often that it's hard to keep track :)

As for doing other cities...yes, London, New York are feasible, Paris would be tricky! I will think about it once I have finished Moscow :)

Renfield

Have you done London already? :)

(Hearty congratulations for all this research, by the way: a valuable reference!)

The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils.
The motions of his spirit are dull as night,
And his affections dark as Erebus.
Let no such man be trusted.

Thanks to you all for the nice compliments :) But if there are mistakes please do point them out!

I'm considering doing some sort of database, but as a text file, with a ton of orchestras in it.

Okay, so I'll do Vienna, unless anyone else wants to do it. Then I'll need an editor.

ChamberNut

Interesting lists!  I did not realize who some of the principal conductors were at various times/locations.  Tres cool!

Let's all get as many as we can and then make a thread with a pin in it (forgot what's it's called) and just put them all out on a single post.

Or just move your last(excellent!) post to a separate thread "Orchestras in Vienna"?
