The new erato

Quote from: Harry on February 09, 2011, 01:49:53 AM
Yes Erato there are enough performances in there that warrant the expenditure. :)
In that case...I have enough stuff laying around unplayed without me seeing how I ever will be able to put it on priority , and have decided that in that case it doesn't matter that the CDs were very cheap, they are simply bad value for money.

A tough day for the hardest working woman in the Bundespost. Five packages from various sources. She's threatening to go on strike.

Six or seven years ago Mrs. Rock and I were at the Nierstein wine fest held in the vineyards above the town. There was a fine Medieval/Renaissance group strolling about, performing. The most memorable moment was when the hurdy-gurdy player sang Schubert's "Der Leiermann" ("The Hurdy-Gurdy Man" from Winterreise). The hurdy-gurdy fit the song perfectly, of course, and we wondered why it hadn't been done that way on record. Well, it has now. I don't know if the other songs in the cycle will benefit but for us the CD is worth its price just for that one song.

My favorite Tchaikovsky symphony is "Winter Dreams" and Brian recommended Jurowski. I also bought the classic Markevitch set which includes a reputedly great First.

Drasko and Mensch ganged up on me, insisted I buy the BBC Michelangeli box (primarily for Gaspard and the Grieg concerto) and MI thinks everyone should own every Bluebeard recording--so to keep him off my back I bought another  ;D

Other arrivals: Babara Hendricks' Bach, Barber and Copland, an unusal two-fer; Fischer-Dieskau's Loewe Ballads and Lieder; and Järvi's Strauss (Domestica, MacBeth, Zarathustra, Til and Don Quixote)

Mahler, you ought to go see it.

Some really interesting stuff there. You can never go wrong with Markevitch and Tchaikovsky. He's not my absolute favorite, but he has a good feel for the music and I admire his perfromances nonetheless. Having bought the complete CPO Loewe set, I've not bought more Loewe for the time being, but that one is on my list. I think you will love it - it's a pretty safe order! And I will be most interested in what you think of this 'experimental' Wintereisse. This is something different enough that I could justify 'one more'version.  ;D
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

We'll be listening to it tonight, after Mrs. Rock comes home from work, after supper. I called her, told it had arrived. She's really excited. She loved the clips she heard at Amazon, thought it made the cycle sound medieval (her favorite classical music era). It's interesting too for another reason: our first Winterreise sung by a woman.

Don't have Birgit Fasbaender?

No, don't own it, haven't even heard it despite the glowing reviews. I've avoided it because Winterreise seems to me to be a quintessentially young man's view of romance and heartbreak. Seems incongruence--if not plain wrong--for a woman to sing it. This new version may change my mind.

Well, it sounds good.  If you feel it must be a man, just imagine Michael Jackson is singing when you listen.

She's not that butch.

And for hotness, go C.Schaefer! Didn't like the recording in the beginning... but found the approach stunning eventually, after hearing her live. Drained of all color. If you don't get goosebumps by the time of "Der Wegweiser", something's wrong with you.

I do like Schaefer's voice. I'll keep her Winterreise in mind.

Just imagine Michael Jackson singing "Hurdy-Gurdy man" to Bubbles before bed every night.  What a beautiful image.   ;D

I'd suggest a small Tchaikovsky marathon, some CD pressing problems have been reported for that set.
