Went to NYC today, so got a chance to shop at Academy Records!  Here's what I got:

Some very interesting symphonies that Simpson composed. I need to go back and revisit this set.

yeah, it is.  At least the one in Manhattan is still there.  Would go there more often if I didn't live 3 hrs away.

I am not familiar with him at all.  I picked that (and the Rosenberg) because I don't know if I would be them if I didn't see them in person and they were moderately priced.  I am interested to hear them, though.

I recently got that set (steeply discounted on amazon marketplace) after listening to and enjoying the 9th symphony.  Sort of like an atonal version of Bruckner.

Sounds interesting.  Will make it a point to listen to it soon.  Not the biggest fan of Bruckner himself (at least not yet), I can't imagine what an atonal version of him would be like.  Time will tell.

Well, elemental themes, grinding dissonances, long drawn crescendos with lots of august brass sonorities, but no tonic.

Super interested in your thoughts on these when you get around to them!

A tough day for the hardest working woman in the Bundespost. Five packages from various sources. She's threatening to go on strike.

Six or seven years ago Mrs. Rock and I were at the Nierstein wine fest held in the vineyards above the town. There was a fine Medieval/Renaissance group strolling about, performing. The most memorable moment was when the hurdy-gurdy player sang Schubert's "Der Leiermann" ("The Hurdy-Gurdy Man" from Winterreise). The hurdy-gurdy fit the song perfectly, of course, and we wondered why it hadn't been done that way on record. Well, it has now. I don't know if the other songs in the cycle will benefit but for us the CD is worth its price just for that one song.

My favorite Tchaikovsky symphony is "Winter Dreams" and Brian recommended Jurowski. I also bought the classic Markevitch set which includes a reputedly great First.

Drasko and Mensch ganged up on me, insisted I buy the BBC Michelangeli box (primarily for Gaspard and the Grieg concerto) and MI thinks everyone should own every Bluebeard recording--so to keep him off my back I bought another  ;D

Other arrivals: Babara Hendricks' Bach, Barber and Copland, an unusal two-fer; Fischer-Dieskau's Loewe Ballads and Lieder; and Järvi's Strauss (Domestica, MacBeth, Zarathustra, Til and Don Quixote)

That looks quite interesting, no surprise after our recent discussions :)

And then I looked up your Winterreise at JPC, and the samples are so EXCITING! I had quite a lot of doubts, but - I'm listening to the samples just now - and it already gives me gooseflesh!

Wow! Must have!

As to the Loewe, interesting too. Do you know the series with different singers from CPO? I have three of them.

Goosebumps, please. Gooseflesh sounds very creepy.  :P

I'm working my way through that box on CPO... the songs are not all at the same level, but much of the singing is very fine.

Aha, is gooseflesh just wrong in this context, or too strong?

Yes, I think the same about the voices.

I do my buying in small batches and my posting here less frequently and in larger batches. So:

Roussev/D'Oria-Nicolas: Grieg and Medtner Sonatas (Fondamenta)
A fiery recording of Jolivet's solo Suite Rhapsodique (1965) turned me on to Roussev, and the previews of the Medtner 3rd seem equally exciting. I'm not a huge fan of the Grieg 3rd but maybe this recording will win me over.

Nicholson: Handel Suites (Hyperion)

Meyerson: Bohm Suites (Glossa)
This has several advocates here at GMG; a recent post by Que got me interested.

Various: Jolivet - Chamber Music for Strings (Saphir)
Mostly for the two late suites for solo strings.

Beate Altenburg: Cello Portrait (Arte Nova)
Mostly for the Jolivet solo suite, but it's an interesting program overall.

Hoeppner/Loman/et al: French Chamber Music with flute and harp (Marquis)
Mostly for the Debussy Sonata, a great performance.

Goebel/MAK: Telemann Wind Concertos (Archiv)

Ruth Waterman et al: Bach Sonatas for Violin and Keyboard BWV 1014-1019 (Meridian)
I usually like HIPper performances, but Waterman and her partners (Morey Ritt on one disc, Carole Presland on the other) are persuasive on modern violin and piano.

B. Kuijken/Voix Humaines: Telemann Works for Flute and Viola Da Gamba (Atma)

"goosebumps" and "gooseflesh" are synonymous, although the latter is less commonly used these days and may seem strange (doesn't bother me)

Just arrived from Import CDs.  $70, shipping included, for 36 CDs by one of my favorite French pianists.  Is it too much music?  Nah.  It will look nice alongside my 29 CD Casadesus Edition.  I do enjoy French pianism.

Also got that one, when it first came out a few months ago.

Mine is shelf-mate with this one:

Looks like I missed my chance to pick up the Cziffra edition.

You can still get it from a couple sellers, though some ask silly prices.  My local CD hut still has it, but for $240.  I thought about getting it, but I don't like Cziffra enough to spend that much on that many discs.

At the going rate it is out of the question, but it was a temptation when it was first released and was being discounted aggressively by various sellers.

The Casadesus box sounds very interesting.  I only have these two of his:
