BBC Legends: Michelangeli

Coopmv

Just placed the last order on the following box set with Amazon for this weekend ...

I am quite excited that the set actually includes the recording from a long cherished LP, the first classical LP I bought 30 years ago ...

I have a better image on my desktop but the upload has stopped working since the last site upgrade.

Bought these two DVDs for a great price:

The new erato

A really excellent 25% off on Hyperion at europadisc - for all of two days!

The first disc in the Hindemith series was magnificent, so I've been looking to complete the series.

This arrived today:

Dvorak: Piano Works (Kvapil)

After all the praise here and Kvapil's nice recording on Dvorak's piano I ordered it too.

Yes, I do love it :)

(Kvapil, Dvorak)

Interesting to compare it with Kvapil's later recordings: The heart-melting melancholic ones from the newer disk I find much more emotional, while the other pieces I find more interestingly played in the early set. As a whole I find the older set more convincing.

I have really come around to his conducting these past several months. He's such a knowledgeable musician. I have heard great things about these documentaries. He knows Copland, Ives, and Stravinsky very well, so it will be interesting to watch him dissect these composer's music.

I will be purchasing the Leonard Bernstein Young People's Concerts DVD series next. Bernstein is one of my musical heroes.

I have nothing yet by him that gives me a clear idea how I like him (just Saint-Saens cello concerto with Isserlis). Your (?) recommendation of Tchaikovsky's first will be a good opportunity to find out for me, but I wait till I can get it really cheap, because I'm not so interested in the Debussy.

I remember watching a Bernstein program on TV when I was younger, where he analysed Beethoven or Mozart in great detail, and I was impressed how much he made me see and understand.

Tilson Thomas has such a clear understanding of what he wants to discuss and how to go about making his audience understand what he is teaching (I've watched videos where he is talking and discussing music). I know many people who don't like him nor do they like his conducting, but I respect that people don't like his way with music. Many people don't like Bernstein, Solti, or Boulez either, but I think these conductors were all incredibly knowledgeable musicians and knew how to get what they wanted from their orchestras. You may not like their styles, but to deny their musicianship would be foolish I think.

I like some Solti (e. g. his Ring, or a wonderful set of Haydn's London symphonies), and to my own surprise I'm quite a fan of Boulez e. g. with Mahler. He has a great clarity, and under the calm (edit: and controlled) surface I see a lot of subtlety and feeling.

Solti's Ring cycle is on my to-get list. I've never been a great lover of opera, but have come around to enjoying the genre more this past year, in particluar 20th Century operas like Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle and Berg's Wozzeck. Not to mention many of Janacek's operas.

Yes, I like Bluebeard and the Janacek operas too. I remember not having heard of Janacek before and then watching Jenufa at the opera: I was so excited and fell in love with him instantly. I went to that production several times again :-)

Scarpia
