I have three or four recording of that work, collectively I call those recordings Children of Our Time.

:D I will have three recordings once the Hickox and Tippett conducted recordings arrive. I already have Colin Davis's classic account on Philips (included in a 4 CD Decca box set of Tippett vocal/choral works).

Sorry - I can't look at that pic without thinking, "That kid's been eating too many beans."

The kid ate exactly 239 beans. I'm glad he didn't eat one more bean because he would be too-farty. :D

Just placed an Amazon order (my first order directly from AmazonUS in several months)

Since the 9th is possibly my favorite piece of music evah I'm always an easy mark for another performance.  In this case Edward's comments provided the spark (and also the information that the recording existed). With the second I will be dipping my ears into the sea of Schnittkean sound for the first time, and from the comments here on GMG this seems to be a good way to start.

Just bought this for $8 in like new condition:

I find this is a fascinating work. Like much of Tippett's music from the time it takes a lot of risks, some of which fall flat on their face, but for me that's outweighed by the parts of the score where the composer is at his considerable best. The last quarter hour or so is, for me, probably the most moving music the composer wrote, with the use of the main "ice break" motif being perfectly judged.

Awesome, Edward. Thanks for your feedback.

After seeing Que's positive write up for this (see Bach on the harpsichord thread), naturally I gave into temptation.

That's just enough to make me vomit.

That should certainly give the newbies a flattering impression of you, John, and a nice sense of the level of discourse on GMG.

It's a joke, Karl. Sorry you took offense to it.

Considering other Bach comments you have made, I think it's only half-joking.  Overall, you're a much more pleasant and insightful GMG member when you stick to praising your preferred composers.  When it comes to Bach, you are clueless.

You're right. I'll stick to composers whose music I prefer.

Anyway just bought these (inspired by a recent mention of a Glazunov/Serebrier box set):

Bought these for my Dad. I think Serebrier's cycle was the only one he was missing.

Thanks for posting the covers.  It's the first time I noticed that the conductor goes with a different orchestra for the concertos.  Did that work out well?  I haven't heard the concertos set yet.

It's not any matter of may taking offense to it, John.  I don't care one way or another, for myself.

As I indicated in my post (which you strangely misread as a matter of my "taking offense") I thought right away of there being new members this week.  Maybe they both like Bach (Bach write a lot of great music, which has given many people in the world joy for hundreds of years, it's not a stretch to imagine so).  Your post makes you look very poorly.  I am surprised that you still don't twig that.

You're welcome, Bulldog. :) I have not heard any of these recordings, but, as I said, I bought these for my Dad. I'll probably make copies from his and I'll get back to you. It'll probably be awhile though, I have so much music to listen to, which is always a good thing.

It's too bad sarcasm doesn't pick up well over the Internet. Oh well, my Bach post may reflect poorly on me, but so do the rest of my posts. I'm just a poor ol' sod trying to make his way through the world. :)
